County Intro
Cumberland County was formed in 1749 when it was split off from Goochland County. In 1777 Powhatan County was split off from Cumberland County.
Parish Intro
King William Parish was formed in 1700 when it was split off from Henrico Parish. King William Parish fell into Cumberland County when it was formed. It also served Chesterfield County. Southam Parish was split off from St. James Parish in 1744. When Cumberland County was formed in 1749, both King William Parish and Southam Parish were in Cumberland County. In 1772 Littleton Parish was split off from Southam Parish. In 1777 when Powhatan County was formed, Littleton Parish remained with Cumberland County; and Southam Parish became Powhatan County. Also in 1777, the portions of King William Parish in Cumberland County were added to Cumberland County.
