LEGENDARY JONES VAUGHAN by Frances Bednar and Verna Banes
Shortly before my uncle ROBERT MILLIS VAUGHAN'S death in 1976, his daughter FAY
MILLS helped him record on tape some of his family memories.  One story he told was about
a relative JONES VAUGHAN who was a buffalo hunter, so I put a note in the genealogy column
of the DALLAS NEWS Newspaper about him because I knew his parents (WILLIAM C. &
MARY ANN CHESNUTT VAUGHAN) had lived in  Cooke County  TX in the 1870's.  A
response came from FRANCES BEONAR of Dallas who knew about this colorful person.
Her father had known  Jones well and loved to relate stories about him.
With these clues, Frances and I were able to share much family history.  She wrote that Jones
was involved in buffalo hunting, then turned to prospecting for gold.  He also found a valuable
sulphur deposit.  Sometime in the period 1865-1910 he went to New York City, lost his fortune
on Wall Street, married and had a son.  He never lived with his wife and none of the relatives
ever saw her or the child. He also went to South America, but returned to the Southwest, staking
out mineral claims in the names of all his relatives.  He died 1910 in Cisco, TX.
Does anyone else know about this man and his gold prospector uncle ALPH VAUGHAN?
This is a good example of the value of sharing family legends and "wild stories."
