pension papers (#7990 War of 1812) for a WILLIAM VAUGHN who enlisted at Mercer Co PA.
In 1871, at age 79, he was living at Marion, Linn Co Iowa. m-2 ELIZABETH, 1855.
ROBERT R. VAUGHN, Rt. 1, Box 121. Kearney, HO 64060 sent this interesting note taken from
KANSAS BEFORE 1854: "Capt. WILLIAM VAUGHAN/VAWN, Platte Co Mo resident since
1839 (who had gone to Oregon in 1845 with a pack party, and returned in 1846). His family (wife
and nine children) now accompanied him West. Vaughan's outfit included three ox-drawn wagons,
some cattle, and 158 sheep. An account says the 100 which survived the journey were the first
"blooded" sheep to reach Oregon overland).
BEL HUBBARD WISE, 102 Lakeforest Court, Weatherford, TX 76087 has compiled 16 pages
of computer entries on V/V's of Rutherford, Davidson, & Williamson Co's TN. She is researching
three V/V lines: ASHLEY VAUGHAN m 1807 JANE GREGORY (JO SPEARS family) in Charlotte
Co VA. She hopes to prove that JANE VAUGHAN who m. 1837 in Davidson Co to THOS. C.
OSMENT is their daughter. She would like all information on the WILLIAM VAUGHAN of
Mecklenburg Co VA simply because of the Gregory connection—something that JO SPEARS,
LOUISE HOSKINS, and others have tried to prove.
Her main concern is to gather info on SARAH AN VAUGHAN who m. 1845 EPHRIAM GOSSETT
in F1oyd Co GA. They then moved to Blount Co AL where she died in the 1870's. Ephrian then
married MARY GRAVES. Sarah and Ephriam's children were:
