CHARLES B. VAUGHAN, 442 Conduitt Dr, Mooresville, IN 46158   sent an interesting
article printed in the PORT OF DUBUQUE VISITOR, Spring-Summer 1988 which gives the
HISTORY OF SINNIPEE by Gerda Preston Hartman.  The original owner of the townsite of
Sinm'pee, Grant Co WI, was PAYTON VAUGHAN, a native of NC.  He and his wife arrived
there in 1830.  Names of their children were    GLENDOWER,    PAYTON S.,     and
HARRIETT ANN MARIA who married JOHN SQUIRE FENLEY.  After Payton's death in 1845,
his widow married a man named PRENTICE.
The article was based on "The History of Si'mnpee and the Vaughan Family"
by NELLIE M. STANTON.  If this is your family, let me know.
BESS CLARK, 2170 Old Holton Rd, Macon, GA 31204  has made many trips to VA and
searched for more than 40 years to locate the parents of ALEXANDER VAUGHN and his
wife JANE, who went from VA to GA about the close of the Revolution.  During these
years of search she has found only three references to ALEXANDER.  The first is a
deed from MARY LEATHE, Charlotte Co VA, dated 7 Feb 1775 to her grandson ALEXANDER,
a slave.  Next, in the will of BENJAMIN TUGGLE of Prince Edward Co VA, dated 9 Feb
1776, he names ALEXANDER VAUGHN an executor.
In the 1790 census of VA (taken from 1782-1785 tax digests), Alexander Vaughn
is found in Pittsylvania Co VA, along with THOMAS,    WILLIAM,    WILLIAM JR.,
another THOMAS,    JOHN, and    HUNDLY VAUGHN.
About 1784 Alexander and his wife, Jane (also spelled Jeane) Vaughn turn up
in Richmond Co GA.  They were later cut off into Warren Co GA.
Bess descends from son DANIEL who was born in VA 9 Oct 1780.
Other children were MARY,    JAMES,   and perhaps ALEXANDER.  From then on she has
complete records of the family.  But who were Alexander's parents?  Was MARY LEATHE
his maternal or paternal grandmother?  Any information would be greatly appreciated.
She lamented that in  years of searching, she has encountered few people interested
in Vaughns and never found anyone who could help her.  Let's hope that changes now!

WILLIAM VAUGHN, 2723 Wyoming, St. Louis. HO 63118     called my attention to the
various ways that the Vaughan, etc., is spelled on the 1850 TN Census list:
VANN,   VAUGHAN,   VAUGHT,    VAUGHN,    VAUGHTER,    VAUGN,    VAUN,
VOUGHN,  VOUGNE,   VAUGH,     VAWN.

RUTH DENSON, 903 Kingsbndge Rd, Houston. TX 77073   copied these Vaughan/Vaughn
names from the LAND GRANT INDEX OF TX.:'
GRANTEE          File No.         GRANTEE               File No.

NANCY MAPLES, Rt 2, Box 122, Elkmont. AL  35620  is interested in exchanging
information on JAMES W. VAUGHAN, b. in TN (prob Davidson Co) in 1825.  He married
MARY NOLEN.  He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862 at Thompson Station, Giles
Co TN and deserted his Company in Verona, MS in Feb. 1865.  His family lived in
Limestone Co AL where Mary died.  Their Children:  WILLIAM b 1846;  JOSEPH b 1848;
MARY ELIZABETH, b 1849;   MILTON;    ANDREW JACKSON b 1863;  JAMES, Jr;   PARALEE;
and VERONA, b 1866 and d 1910, m. BENJAMIN F. GRISHAM (gr-grandmother of Nancy).
She would like to know the parents of James W.  There seems to be more than one
James W., so that makes the search more confusing.

Incidentally, Nancy and I discovered that her husband and I are connected to the
Ky1e and Maples families located in Hawkins Co TN around 1800.  One never knows when
the "next cousin" will appear when searching family lines!  My DAR membership was
established upon the service of CAPT. ROBERT KYLE whose daughter MARY married first
JOHN PRIGMORE and second JOHN MAPLES.     I descend from Mary's sister RACHEL who
married WILLIAM McCARTY.
