NARINE WINGFIELD, P.O. Box 1. Paris, AR 72855-0001 sent a newspaper article
detailing remembrances of WILLIAM THEODORE VAUGHN on the occasion of his 87th
birthday (he later died in 1966).  He moved to Ft. Smith, AR in 1907 and joined with
LOUIS LORENZ in the business of wagon making.  But his hobby was violin making, and
the violins he made were apparently perfect in design and true in tone. One of the
instruments he carved with a knife was an odd-shaped mandolin with a bowl shaped
bottom.  He humorously commented that a musician might eat out of the bowl and play
at the same time.  He was born in Chattanooga, TN in 1879 to HAIRSTON & LYDIA VAUGHN
who were born in the Hawkins Co TN area.  Hairston was the son/of JOSEPH VAUGHAN and
MARY ELVIRA BASSETT (see p. 3, Jan 88 Newsletter).
Although the earliest records of this family line spelled the name VAUGHAN,
W.T. said people would not remember to put in the final "a", so he got tired
correcting them and just dropped it!
