Hugh S. Watson Jr: On Family Trees
Quaker records reveal lineage and movements of Vaughans
The Vaughan family of Charles City County were Quakers.  However, all did not remain connected with
this faith.  It was a large family; William Shields Vaughan and wife Hannah Crew had 12 children.  I find in
the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. VI, covering Virginia Meeting Houses of the faith, by
William Wade Hinshaw, the following marriage and the names of the children, many of whom moved to
Southside, Virginia, across the James River:
On Sept 4, 1750, William Shields Vaughan, son of William Vaughan of New Kent County, married in
the Friends (Quaker) Meeting House, Charles City County, Hannah Crew, daughter of Andrew Crew, also
of Charles City County.  William Shields Vaughan died in March 1778.
      The children and their dates:
James Vaughan, born Aug. 27, 1751; died March 12, 176-
Shields Vaughan, born Sept. 30, 1753.
Elizabeth Vaughan, born Sept. 18, 1755.
Frances Ann Vaughan, born Aug. 9, 1757.
William Vaughan, born May 10, 1759.
Molly Vaughan, born Oct. 9, 1761.
Benjamin Vaughan, born Sept. 29, 1763.
Sarah Vaughan, born Oct. 30, 1765; died July 17, 17--.
Hannah Vaughan, born Dec. 6, 1767.
Shadrack Vaughan, born June 9, 1770.
James Vaughan, born March 20, 1773.
Ann Vaughan, born March 28, 1775.
From the above one can see just how much the Quaker records can help in one's search.  So, be sure and
look among these Quaker records.  Your family may not have been Quaker Friends but might have had
some affiliation with them.  There were more Quakers in Virginia than one might think, and Quaker
Meeting Houses were all over.  I might also mention that there were six volumes done by Hinshaw covering
states other than Virginia, such as North Carolina.  The page numbers of Vol. VI for the above Vaughan
family were 215 and 216.

FUNERAL HOME RECORDS
This kind of information may be obtained from a funeral home (rather than a cemetery): deceased's place
of death, date of death, the internment date, location of grave site, surviving members f the family, military
records, Social Security number, back history and any organizations the deceased belonged to.  There may
also be a record of the newspaper in which an obituary appeared..  Often funeral homes are the source of
the oldest burial records available.
In California the State Board of Funeral Directors regulates funeral homes.  The State Board has a list of
all funeral homes in the USA.

NOTE FROM VERNA
Thanks for material sent to me that can be photocopied and used without editing or re-typing.  But I have
found that lines that have been drawn over with highlighting markers will not reproduce clearly.
