From the marriage license of T. Franklin Vaughn
and Martha Young, I was able to identify his parents
as Joseph Vaughn (Jr.) b. 1794-5 in Stokes Co., NC, and Lavinia Carter, daughter of Theodrick Carter and
wife Diana Mallory. Joseph was the youngest son of Joseph Vaughn b. Va. ca 1755, and wife Elizabeth
(?Mitchell) b. Va., who emigrated to Stokes Co. by 1786. A 1778 Militia list for Powhatan Co., Va., includes
a Joseph Vaughn along with William Tucker, W. Goode, and Bennett Goode, names closely associated with
the Vaughns in Stokes. Perhaps it is my Joseph.
Joseph and Elizabeth had children: Anna Terry,
Rebecca Wilson, Mary Murphy, John, Elizabeth Wilson,
Susannah Duncan, Mitchell, Theodotis and Joseph Jr.
Son John, b. 1780-81, Stokes Co., married Ann(a) Ladd, daughter of Joseph and Catherine Dameron
Ladd, and had children Joseph or Josephus, Wyatt, Jane H., Jerome B., Nancy Carter, Louisa Hopkins, Elvira
Davis, Elizabeth Gentry, and Ruth who married her first cousin, Elihu Vaughn.
Son Mitchell b. 1789-90 in Stokes, married
Ruth Carter, sister of Joseph Jr.'s wife, and had children:
Elizabeth Sneed, Theodorick C. Carter, who moved to Henry Co., TN, between 1850 and 1860, Elihu, Emelina
Sneed, Ruth Perdue and Joseph Mitchell.
Son Joseph, Jr., and Lavinia lived in western
Rockingham Co., where Joseph was a teacher. Not surprisingly,
he did not prosper and he alone of this family did not accumulate property, thus leaving fewer clues on his family
than his brothers. Besides Theodorick Franklin, he had a younger son Azariah A, and three daughters, one of
whom might have been the Susan who married Joel Gentry.

There was a Thomas and a Robert Vaughan who were either brothers or uncles of William Joseph Vaughan.
My knowledge is very limited because of the fact that William Joseph died in Arkansas in 1860 when my Grand-
father, John Avret Vaughan was only five years old and was the oldest child. His connection with the Vaughan
family ceased at that time. "Uncle" Thomas and "Uncle" Robert visited the family in Arkansas upon the occasion
of William Joseph's death, but did not arrive until after he was buried. It is not known whether they were uncles
of my Grandfather, John Avret, or were uncles of William Joseph. Also it is not known where they came from
for the visit. Will provide any additional available information at your request.
HUNT CO TX RECORDS
The Hunt Co TX Gene Society is compiling a list of marriages recorded there from 1847 forward. The project
through part of 1913 is done. On the following page is a printout of Vaughn/an names extracted from that list.
