James Vaughan of Brunswick in State of Va., who was a Pvt. in the company commanded by Capt. Clayton
of the regt. commanded by Col. Lucas in the Va. line for 6 mos. & 24 days; records cor 9/27/1904.                                                                       22.66

Commence on 4th day of March 1831.  Certificate of pension issued the20th day of May 1833 & sent to
Robt. Turnbull, CC, Lawrenceville.

State of Virginia - Brunswick Co to wit
      On this 24th day of Dec 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Justices of the Court of
said County now sitting JAMES VAUGHAN a resident of Saint Andrews Parrish in the County of
Brunswick and State of Virginia, aged 76 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on
his oath make the following Declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed
June 7, 1832 -- that he entered the service of the U.S. under the following named officers and served as
herein stated.  That he entered the service of the U.S. in the year 1780 under William COLLIER as a
drafted Militia man and served a tour of duty of four months.  Col. James LUCAS commanded the
Regiment that he was marched from the County of Brunswick where he was drafted to the Chesaw
Hills in the State of South Carolina on our way to "ninety six", and were met on the way by Gen.
MORGAN who had several prisoners, and we were ordered by Gen. STEVENS to guard the said
prisoners, to same place at this time not recollected.  That he served a tour of six months as a drafted
man under Capt. John CLAYTON of Brunswick County, and was marched to Portsmouth on (or?)
Swans Point.  Field officers Col. ELLIOTT & Maj. POOLE.  He served another tour of six weeks under
Capt. ___ HOUSE of said County, Field officers Gen. LAWSON & STEPHENS, and was marched thru
the County of Chesterfield and crossed Appomattox at Basil's Bridge, and thence to a place called the
Mineral Springs near where General WASHINGTON was stationed, when his time expired, and he was
discharged.  He has no documentary evidence, and that he knows of no person by whom he can prove
his services.  He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a Pension or annuity except the present
and declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of the Agency of any state.  Sworn to & subscribed
the day & year aforesaid.

We JOHN PRITCHETT -- a clergyman residing in the County of Brunswick -- and JOHN PAUK (?),
residing in the same county, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with JAMES VAUGHAN, who
has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration that we believe him to be seventy-six years of age; that
he is respected and believed in the neighborhood where he resides to have been  a soldier of the Revolution
and that we concur in that opinion -- sworn & subscribed the day and year aforesaid.

And the said Court do hereby declare their opinion, after the investigation of the matter and after putting
the interrogations prescribed by the War Department, that the above named applicant was a Revolutionary
soldier and served as he states -- And the Court further certifies that it appears to them that JOHN
PRITCHETT, Senr who has signed the preceding certificate, is a clergyman, resident in the County of
Brunswick, and that JOHN W. PAUP, who has also signed the same, is a resident in the said county, and
is a credible person, and that their statements is entitled to credit.

      I, ROBERT TURNBULL, Clerk of the Court of Brunswick County in the State of Virginia, do hereby
certify that the foregoing contains the original precedings of the said Court in the matter of the application
of JAMES VAUGHAN for a pension.  In testimony whereof I hereto set my hand and annex the Seal of the
said Court this thirty first day of December one thousand eight hundred and thirty two and in the fifty
seventh year of our Foundation.
