REUBEN VAUGHAN
Compiled by JOYCE SPARKS, Box 484, Stroud, OK 74079
Reuben Vaughan was born in August 1836 in Missouri.  He died on 16 October 1904, at age 68,
near Brumley, Missouri in Miller County.  His parentage and siblings are unknown but believed
that his parents were both born in Kentucky.
He first married on 6 October 1853 in Miller County to Mahala J. Vaughan, daughter of Elisha
and Martha (Johnson) Vaughan.  Mahala was born about 1834 in Cooper County and died in 1861
at Jefferson City in Cole County.  Reuben and Mahala had four children:
        1.  Martha Ellen Vaughan, born in June 1854.  She married Franklin Davenport on 2 June
1873 in Miller County.
        2.  Thomas Benjamin Vaughan, born February 1856.  He married Finetta Elizabeth Jane Wilcox
on 13 May 1877 in Miller County.
        3.  Nancy A. Vaughan, born about 1857.  She married  ? Burtner (unsure of spelling).
        4.  Mahala Jane Vaughan, born February 1861.  She married  ? Weaver.
By 1861, Reuben and Mahala had probably moved to Cole County where she died that year in
Jefferson City.  On 31 May 1862, Reuben married Martha Jane Buster in Miller County.  Martha
had been previously married to  ? Wall, and had Wall children.  Martha and Reuben had one child,
a son, Edward Vaughan, born on 5 October 1866.  He married Sarah C. McComb on 24 December
1885 in Miller County.  Martha died on 10 January 1883.
Reuben was age 26 when he enlisted in the Home Guard, Union Army, during the War Between
the States, on 14 August 1862, at Jefferson City, Missouri.  He was married, a farmer, of fair
complexion, had grey eyes, brown hair, was five feet eight inches in height and lived in Miller County.
He mustered in on 5 September 1862 at Benton Barracks and served two years, eleven months and
twenty-six days before being given an honorable discharge.  He mustered out on 10 August 1865.
During the time he spent in the Union Army, he became ill with chronic diarrhea, kidney disease,
rheumatism and loss of hearing -- both ears being affected.  he was treated at different times and
returned to duty.  he applied for pension in 1889 and drew $10 per month until his death in 1904.
Reuben's third wife was Elizabeth.  Her maiden name was either Bond or Haddox.  They married
on 22 November 1892 near Brumley, Missouri.  Elizabeth had previously been married to a man
named Bond or Haddox and Samuel Parris.  After Reuben's death in 1904, Elizabeth drew $30 per
month pension, until she died on 8 March 1928.  Reuben and Elizabeth had no children.  They are
buried in Gott Cemetery near Brumley, Missouri.

During my research prior to publishing a genealogical study on the ALEXANDER SHELDON
VAUGHAN FAMILY in 1983, I found the following information which may assist you in your
research of the Reuben Vaughan Family prior to 1837.

According to the Missouri Census (1830-1850), there was a Reuben Vaughan living in Gasconade
County, Missouri in 1830-1840 and in Osage County, Missouri in 1850.  This Reuben Vaughan is
believed to be the son of William and Margaret (Peggy) Vaughan in Kentucky.  The following are
believed to be his brothers and sisters:
Nancy     born  1/2/1794             Elizabeth     born  6/17/1808
    Samuel      "     1/14/1796           Sarah              "     9/12/1810
    Ruben       "      9/20/1801          Wm Arthur     "      6/22/1812
    Mary         "     11/7/1803           Herod             "      6/30/1813
    Joel           "      2/1/1806            Wm Hood       "     6/5/1816

Press) 1968, pp 785-793.

This particular Ruben Vaughan's family came to Missouri from Kentucky around 1830 (See
Kentucky Census 1800-1830 in Green County and Missouri Census 1830-1850 in Gasconade and
Osage Counties).  However, I found another Reuben Vaughan living in Hart County, Kentucky
in 1830.
In any event, I believe a thorough research of the Kentucky and Missouri records prior to 1837
will be most rewarding
I believe that Ruben's (Reuben) family was related to "old" (??) Samuel Vaughan's
family who was living in Washington County, Kentucky in the latter 1800 century and who had
13 children.
