Pub. Cos STEPHEN VAUGHN, one of the pioneer settlers of Wayne Couty, Iowa, now residing
on section 5, Grand River Township,  is a native of Wayna County, Kentucky, where he was born
February 14, 1826, a son of Rev. John Vaughn, who is now deceased.   He passed his youth among
the mountains of his native State, and as there were no schools in his neighborhood, he received no
educational advantages.  He was married in November, 1846, to Mary J. Nicclaud, a daughter of
Abel Nicclaua, of Pulaaki County, Kentucky, Mrs. Vaughn being a native of that county.  In 1851 Mr.
Vaughn came to Wayne County, Iowa, with his wifa and two children, having but 10 cents in money
when he reached his destination.  Since coming here he has been eminently successful in his agricultural
pursuits, and now owns a good farm of 127 acras, which has been acquired by the united industry and
strict economy of himself and wife.  They have had thirteen chilren born to them, of whom eleven
still survive--Martha A., Elizabeth, Lewis, George W., Charles W., James R., John A., Jeptha D., Stephen
A., Sarah F. and William F.  Mr. Vaughn is a member of the Christian Union.

11. Thomas - Garland, Captain of Militia of Lunenburg County, Virginia, married "Polley" (Mary)
Lowry of Mecklenburg County, Virginia. The marriage bond, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, is
dated July 8, 1783, for the marriage of Captain Thomas Garland of Lunenburg County, Virginia to
"Folley Lowry." Consent was given' by John Ragadale, Guardian of "Polley." Thomas Garland died
intestate; but his wife made a will.'Thomas Lowry Garland did not live very long after his parents,
for on Nov 12, 1808 Reuben Vaughan was appointed his administrator (Lunanburg Co. Court
0. B. 20, p 328), and the "John Garland" of the will of Mary Garland was doubtless "John T. Garland,"
for on December 14, 1809:

"David Garland with the approbation of the Court is appointed guardian of John T. Garland." This
was, it seems, the "John Garland" for whom Reuben Vaughan, Junr, had previously been guardian.
It indicates, also, that David Garland had by this date (1809) attained his majority. A suit brought
in 1609 by David Garland, against Thomas L Garland's administrator.
