DENNIS R. VAUGHN, 3168 Birmingham, Ft. Collins, CO 80526 requests information related
to JOHN VAUGHN who was living in Owens Co IN by 1850 with wife Silvia. His family has a
newsletter and a genealogical tree established by VIC STALCUP. RR#4,   Box 464, Anderson,
IN 46011. Dennis has done indepth research of the origins of the word "Vaughan." He says that
Mr. Dellquest's analysis as indicated in the April 1984 issue of the Newsletter, is completely wrong.
Vaughan is the English spelling of the ancient Celtic word "Fychan" meaning little or small and was
also used to indicate a child of a father, much as we use "Junior" today. The German "Von" has
the same Celtic roots and means "son of" in German. "Fychan" is a Welsh name but a Celtic word
which has an origin in Pre-Roman times in England/Wales. This would make the name at least 2000
years old as the Romans were in England at the time of Christ. The  Vaughan  spelling first appears
in the l3th & 14th centuries.  He further states that the "Vaughn" spelling appears to be a more recent
Anglizing of the old "Vaughan" spelling.  Thanks to Dennis for this further study into our special family
surname!
