THE "JAMES BROTHERS" AGAIN
OPAL SCHMELING, P.O. Box 473, Whitehall, WI 54773 sent this story as told by JACK
VAUGHAN of Oklahoma City, thought to be a cousin of the James brothers. "A well-dressed
man, traveling alone, rode up on a beautiful black; horse to a farm where one of the Vaughana
lived. He asked if he could put up for the night, so the horse "Black Bess" was put into the barn.
Later in the evening, the traveler and the host went to the barn to check things. Mr. Vaughan a
sked the stranger why he didn't take the saddle from the horse. His answer was, "I just might
have to leave in a hurry." Mr. Vaughan then said to him, "I think I know who you (Frank James?)
are, but I'm not going to say anything." So no more was said. In the evening, the guest played the
violin belonging to the Vaughans. He was a very good violinist. He also did some target shooting.
A rather small hole was cut completely through a tree. The stranger rode around and around the
tree at a considerable distance; and each time he went by the hole on either side, he shot through
it and never missed a. shot."  Opal said that Jack had seen the grave marker for Frank James.
It has on it the name Joe Vaughan and underneath--Alias Frank James. See more on this story
in the 1984 and 1985 issues of the newsletter. She also sent a photograph of the marker for
AYRES VAUGHAN, located in the Old Vaughan Graveyard near Prastonburg, KY. Reading
on the stone "A.T.V", (Ayres T.Vaughan), age 100 DSD (deceased) 1742 - 1842.   This seems
to be a large natural shaped monument type stone. See p. 31, June 1986 Newsletter.
