State Fair to feature exhibit on genealogy
Margaret Ann Thetford
FAMILY TREE

A special event has been created for the 1986 State Fair of Texas: the sesquicentennial family history and
genealogy exhibit and competition.
The Dallas Genealogical Society is assisting the fair with this year's event, which will spotlight early Texas
settlers.  Genealogists may submit material applicable to: "Life in Texas before Statehood.  Ancestral line or
lines traced through a person who was in the area now a part of Texas prior to Feb 19, 1846," the date Texas
became a state.
Entries will be judged on documentation, clarity and originality.  First, second and third place winners will
be displayed in the Hall of State during the fair, Sept. 26 through Oct. 26.
Entries may be published books or in notebook form, and the winning entry in each category will be awarded
a trophy.  In addition, there will be special awards for entries such as the earliest documented person in Texas,
the greatest number of direct lines in Texas prior to statehood, the entry best illustrating the lifestyle of the
period, the best illustrated entry (photographs, maps sketches, etc.) and special ribbons for those entries
documenting a person here 150 or more years ago (1836 or before).
Participation by young people is particularly encouraged, and students in grades six through 12 are invited to
write about their Texas heritage, even if they are relatively newcomers to the state.
This category will not require genealogical research, but rather students are asked to submit essays on "My
Family's Texas Heritage."  These might explore the reasons or events that brought the family to Texas.  When,
where and why did they come here?  Interviews with relatives could form the basis for an essay, or it might be
based on a family legend.
A trophy will be awarded to the best essay in grades six through eight and one for grades nine through 12.
Certificates of recognition will be presented for the winning essay in each of the seven grades represented.
The winning entries will also be on exhibit during the fair.
Details and entry blanks will be found on the information sheets that have been sent to genealogical societies
and libraries throughout the state.  You may request one by sending a stamped, self-addressed, business-size
envelope to the State Fair of Texas, Genealogy Exhibit, P.O. Box 26010 Dallas, 75226.  There is no entry fee.
