                              THE SESQUICENTENNIAL - "OPERATION ATTIC"

The 150th birthday of the State of Arkansas is a good occasion to see what historical resources survive in your
family and to arrange for their preservation for future generations.

You may have valuable material and not even know it.  That is why the Arkansas Sesquicentennial Commission
Task Force on Museums, Archives and Libraries has begun what it calls "OPERATION ATTIC" and urges you
to look around and see just what you might have.  Letters, diaries, ledgers, photographs, documents, books and
even textiles and furniture often are stored in attics, basements, closets or other out-of-the-way places and could
be of real interest to historians.  Often, owners are not sure what is in an old trunk or "why Grandma ever kept
that, anyway".  Such materials do not have to be from a governor's family to be valuable to historians.  Old
materials of ANY type can give us a clearer view of our past.

YOU can help!  Look in your attic, (or wherever), to see if you have such material.  Make a list of the type of
things you have.  Archives, libraries and museums actively seek such historical materials in original or photo-
copied form.  Many have climate-controlled rooms and special staff for the care of valued documents and
property.  You do not have to give things away.  They may be lent on permanent or temporary basis, copied,
or, if you wish, presented as a memorial.  It is a very special way for you to perpetuate your family's history.
Such sharing of your historical materials, on loan or as a gift, is also a special present to the State of Arkansas
on its 150th birthday.

Call or write the Arkansas History Commission, #1 Capitol Mall, Little Rock, 72201, (501) 371-2141; or Bill
Worthen, Arkansas Territorial Restoration, 3rd and Scott Streets, Little Rock, 72201, (501) 371-2348.  They
will be glad to hear from you!

HELPFUL HINTS

Have you made a will?  if not, please consider it seriously.  Two of our San Bernadino members recently had tragic experiences.  There were no wills and no one knew where important papers were left.  This made a difficult situation
even worse.

In such cases the state makes the decisions, and lawyers receive the money that might otherwise go to heirs.  Without
a will, the estate may be divided in a manner that the deceased would not have wished.  The best advice is to consult
a lawyer whose specialty is wills and estates.  Also, let those concerned know about the STRS $2,000 death benefit,
and especially where important papers are stored.
