In the Queries of DAR Magazine in the May 1985 issue, you inquired about Vaughan families
and said that you have extensive information on many different Vaughan family lines.

In my own Vaughan research, I have noticed your Thomas Vaughan, b. 1793, in the 1830 Census
of McMinn County, Tennessee.

But I have been unable to find a relationship between him and my Thomas Vaughan (I) and my
Thomas Vaughan (II), born ca. early 1800's probably in Virginia.  Thomas Vaughan (I) was from Virginia and went to White County, Tennessee, from Burke County, North Carolina, about
1808-1810 with the families of Thomas Wilcher (his father-in-law), the Gordons, Blacks, Hammonds,
and Englands.  Thomas Vaughan (I) acquired land in the part of White County that later became
Warren County.

My Thomas Vaughan (I) married Rittnier (Ritty, Kitty) Wilcher, daughter of Thomas Wilcher.
Their children were Polly Vaughan, who married Leroy Hammond; Sterling (Starling); Aaron,
Thomas II, and Alberto Vaughan, b. 1813.

Ritty (Wilcher) Vaughan's father died prior to 1816, the year his will or deed of gift was recorded
in Warren County.  Also, Ritty must have died prior to that date because Wilcher bequeathed to
her children (except to Alberto) in the will.

Thomas Vaughan (I) and Thomas Vaughn (II), and Aaron Vaughan sold most of their land in
Warren County ca. 1820 and moved with some of the Hammonds to Cooper County, Missouri,
where Thomas Vaughan (I) died Aug. 22, 1827.  At the time of his death, his wife was Nancy
Vaughan.

We found no record of the Sterling (Starling) Vaughan in Cooper County, Missouri.  He might
have remained in Warren County, Tennessee; however, there was a Starling (Sterling) Vaughan
in Henry County, Tennessee, whom I have not connected to any other Vaughans.  Alberto
Vaughan remained in Warren County with his sister Polly and her husband, LeRoy Hammond
as his guardian.  (My father's name was Sterling Park).

Through his guardian, Alberto Vaughan participated in the settlement of the estate of his
maternal grandfather, Thomas Wilcher, Sr. and Archibald Wilcher, his uncle.

In 1836 Alberto Vaughan and his family came to Texas with the Kentucky Volunteers.  Alberto,
my great-grandfather, received land grants in Montgomery and Walker Counties, TX, for his
services to the Republic of Texas.  He disposed of that land and moved to Bold Springs (now
west) about 16 miles north of Waco in McLelland County.

            Walker Co.
Alberto Vaughan's family listed in the 1850 Census were his wife Martha (Royal) Vaughan, 39 yrs.;
Mary, 19 yrs., b. in Tenn.; Patrick, 17, born in Tenn.; Martha, 15 yrs., b. in Tenn.; Tennessee Ann,
12, born in Texas, and Alberto, Jr., 6 yrs. born in Texas.  In another household was Peter Royal,
32 yrs., and Sterling Vaughan, 20 yrs. student, born in Tennessee.

Alberto Vaughan, Sr., died in June 1861, and his wife Martha Jane (Royal) Vaughan was appointed administratrix of his estate in McLennan County, Tx.

In May 1856 Tennessee Ann Vaughan married William Burney Park, my grandfather. They named
a son Sterling Park, who was my father. And so, that is how I got into the Vaughan dilemma.

Now, for earlier research that may be of more interest to you.  Because both my wife and I have
Vaughan lines, we have studied the Vaughan families in several Virginia Counties, especially in Mecklenburg, Lunenburg, Halifax, Pittsylvania, Amelia, Henry, Nattoway and Montgomery.

Briefly, we found the names of Starling (Sterling) Vaughan and Aaron Vaughan in Halifax and Meklenburg Counties, Virginia, and a very active Leroy Hammond in Amelia County.  But we
have found no positive connection with my Thomas Vaughan (I) and any of the Virginia Vaughans.

Tradition in Warren County, Tennessee places my Thomas Vaughan among the Vaughan families
of Amherst or Nelson Counties, Va. However, after studying their county records, I could not make
any such Vaughan connection.  But we did trace our Thomas Wilcher family from Amherst County, Virginia, to White County, Tennessee.

Our book, Francis Moody, His Ancestors, Descendants, and Related Families, published by Gateway Press, has 27 pages in Chapter 9, "Martha (Vaughan) Moody's Relatives--Paternal".  This is my wife's Vaughan ancestors, mostly in Mecklenburg and Lunenburg Counties, Va.  Her direct Vaughan line is
as follows:

James Vaughan, Lunenburg County, Will July 20, 1749.  Some published books show the date
as 1840, but context and the original record indicates 1749.
Reuben Vaughan (1732-1817) married Elizabeth Ingram (1734-1820)
                 Martha Vaughan (ca. 1772-ca. 1805) m. Francis Moody (1769-1821) m. 1789.  Martha
and Francis Moody were my wife's 2-great-grandparents.

I am enclosing copies of two pages from our book.  These show the James Vaughans who were
taxpayers in Mecklenburg County, Va., from 1782-1789.

How do you know that the father of your Thomas Vaughan (b. 1793) was James Vaughan?  How
much do you know about him?  Please answer this question; it might be very helpful to us.

Our OPINION is that my Thomas Vaughan (I) might have come from the Lunenburg-Mecklenburg- Halifax vicinity in Virginia since he was with Vaughans in Warren County, Tennessee who were
named Starling (Sterling) and William.  But we have not yet made a satisfactory link.

We do not have you McCarty name in any of our notes.

I do hope that something I have in this letter will be useful to you.  In any event, I shall be very
pleased to hear what you have to say about the Vaughan dilemma.

Yours truly,
Wilbur G. Park, Sr.

My query in the DAR magazine for Vaughan/Vaughn searchers brought many interesting
contributions.  Wilbur Park's letter is given here.  See the following pages for a follow-up
