BIOGRAPHY OF CHARLES VAUGHAN OF NAVASOTA TEXAS TAKEN FROM THE BOOK
TEXAS AND ITS MEN by L. E. Daniell
CHARLES VAUGHAN was born in Amelia Co VA, Jan. 3, 1844. Father was
Henderson F. Vaughan and mother was Mollie B. Walthall. C. V. was reared
in Amelia and Prince Edward Co.
Schooled in Prince Edward Co. In Jan. 1862, entered into Confederate
Army--Company C.,18th Virginia Infantry, Pickett's Brigade, Longstreet's
Corp. He took part in all the stirring scenes about Richmond and was
in engagements at Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Gaine's Mill, and at intermediate
places, and was twice wounded by a shell explosion (taking effect in the
spine), at Seven Pines, by a gun shot (shattering his right arm) at Gaine's
Mill, and surrendered at Appomattox at the general armistice.
Returning home, C. V. found everything devastated and in ruins. He
took up his residence with his mother and step-father. His father died
many years before and his mother re-married, and the year of 1865 made a
crop with horses and on provisions furnished by general government.
Concluding that there was nothing in store for him in his native state, he
left it for Texas in December, 1866 and settled at Old Washington, where
until 1869 he alternately clerked in a mercantile establishment business,
first as a clerk, and later on his own account.
In 1873, C. V. married Imogene C. Cabler, daughter of Edwin S. Cabler, old settler of Washington County.
This book is in the library at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas.
