JESSE EDWARDS, 909 Meadowbrook Dr, Birmingham, AL 35215 (see p. 20, April 1984) has this
extra info on the Vaughn/Edwards connections. Siblings: LUCY, ABSOLAN, & MARTHA EDWARDS
. LUCY married a VAUGHN in TN. Martha m TONEY ANTON DEITRICH of Nashville, TH (a
jeweler) who d in 1920. ELIZABETH EDWARDS (her maiden name was CULWELL or CULLEMS)
b in 1824 was mother of the above Edwards children. The Edwards family lived between Shelbyville and
Murfreesboro, TN on the Bedford s Rutherford Co line in 1870. She would like to contact relatives of
any of these people.
MABEL HARP, 401 S. Powell, Wagoner, OK 74467: CARTER A. VAUGHN, b 1 Jan 1849, d 9 Jan
1911, son of SAMUEL N. and MALVINA CHURCH VAUGHAN, m-1 Sarah? and second Matilda?.
No children. Does anyone know maiden names? All lived in Hancock To TN--Copper Ridge along
Clinch Mt. Mabel has compiled an interesting history about her VAUGHN ANCESTORS which begins
with the record of JOHN VAUGHN who enlisted in the Continental Army in 1777 in Capt.Wm. Brown's
Maryland Artillery. John never applied for a pension, stating he did not want it or did not need it.
However in 1858, his widow NANCY CALLICOTT, did apply for it, stating she had waited 14 years for
someone to write it for her. Her application gives the entire history of her life with John. Attached to the
back of the application is a list of the births of all the children. They sent this priceless list along with her application, but Nancy did not receive the pension as she could not prove they were legally married. She
said they "ran away" into Halifax Co., VA and were married by Parson Hays in his home on 16 Oct 1794.
Mabel thinks her father would not give permission for Nancy to marry a man twice her age, so they left
Charlotte Co., never to return. Mabel has located the farm that John and Nancy purchased in 1800 in
Hawkins Co.(now Hancock Co), TN. The last Vaughn who owned it was CARTER VAUGHN, s of Samuel.
He did not have any children so left it to his nephew. The lady living there now said there was an old log
house which they had tacked tar paper over to preserve it until it can be restored. Vaughns are buried in
thecemetery on Copper Ridge across the meadow from the old home site. There are many stones broken
and unreadable and some graves marked with rocks.
Vaughans buried there with readable stones are: SAMUEL N. VAUGHN & wife MALVINA CHURCH
VAUGHN. Their son CARTER A. VAUGHN and wife SARAH.
Mabel has other material on the family, including the ROLLER-ROLLEN Family connections.

LEWIS.
