County Intro
Isle of Wight County was formed in 1637 when it was split off from Warrosquyoake Shire, one of the original shires of Virginia. In 1723 and 1732 some of its territory was added to Brunswick County (which was later split off into Greensville County). In 1749, Southampton County was split off from Isle of Wight County.
Parish Intro
Warrosquyoake Parish was formed ca 1629. In 1643, Newport Parish was split off from Warrosquyoake Parish. After 1643, Newport Parish is also known as Lower Parish and Warrosquyoake Parish is also known as Upper Parish. In 1734, the Upper Parish was dissolved and Nottoway Parish and Newport Parish were formed. When Southampton County was formed in 1749, it included Nottoway Parish. St. Luke's Parish was formed in 1762 when it was split off from Nottoway Parish. St. Lukes Parish was then in Southampton County.
