PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, VIRGINIA

VAUGHAN FAMILY WIKI

This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. Facts about where these early Vaughan family members moved to after they left Southside Virginia will be particularly welcome.

The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number.

Archer/Archibald Vaughan - G93C-6KN

Archer/Archibald Vaughan was in Charlotte Co. 1812-1840; and Prince Edward Co. 1838-1850. There are a few years that overlap where it appears there are two Archers. I suspect this is a fluke. In the 1850 Census of Charlotte Co. he reported he was b. 1792 in Charlotte Co.

Archer/Archibald was the illegitimate son of Molly Vaughan of Charlotte Co. (VA Charlotte WB 02.147), who was the daughter of Abraham Vaughan of Charlotte Co. (VA Charlotte WB 02.083). He m. Jane M. Hamner 18 Feb 1821 in Charlotte Co., Va. Archer was often a trustee of various trust deeds (mortgages).

Archer and Jane are likely the parents of Clement R. Vaughan (b. abt. 1828), nephew of Francis S. Hamner; and Mary F.? J? Vaughan, niece of Francis S. Hamner (See VA Prince Edward WB 09.011). Note: Clement Read was the guardian of Archer Vaughan when he was a minor orphan (VA Charlotte WB 02.147).

George W. Vaughan

George W. Vaughan was b. abt 1814 in Nottoway Co., Va. He m. Lucinda J. Farley 10 December 1834 in Prince Edward Co.. The first appears in the personal tax digests starting in 1836; and the land tax digests starting in 1840. By 1850 he was m. to Louisa _____.

Henry M. Vaughan - LDNZ-HJB

Henry M. Vaughan was b. 1804 in Goochland Co., Va. (1850 Census Prince Edward Co.). He paid personal taxes from 1825-1850 in Prince Edward Co. He was m. to Eliza A. in the 1850 Census.

Dr. Jack Vaughan - KZZR-R76

Dr. Jack Vaughan was from Goochland Co. He was the son of Matthew Vaughan (VA Goochland DB 19.241 & 23.005), who d. by 1797 in Goochland Co. He m. (1) Rhoda ___, as of 1804 in Goochland Co. (VA Goochland DB 19.241). He moved to Prince Edward Co. by 1806. While in Prince Edward Co.., he m. (2) Nancy Haskins, Widow of John Haskins, 12 May 1810; and (3) Martha H. Ligon, Widow of Thomas D. Ligon, 26 November 1812. He had sons Mathew W. Vaughan, b. abt. 1817 & Samuel W. Vaughan, b. abt. 1823 (VA Prince Edward WB 09.375). See also: Prince Edward Chancery Cases: 1816.001, 1823.013, 1837.005, 1839.017. It appears that Martha Ligon is the mother of his sons. Louisa F. Vaughan, Dau. of Jack Vaughan m. Venable Crute 25 September 1833: and Betsy Ann Vaughan, Dau. of Jack Vaughan m. Stephen C. Lockett 1 October 1836. They could be the child of any of his three wives, depending on their age. His dau. Martha A. Vaughan was the dau. of his second wife Nancy Walthall, who m. (1) John Haskins; and (2) Jack Vaughan. See will of Patience Walthall (VA Prince Edward WB 04.473; and Prince Edward Chancery Case 1816.001).

James Vaughan - MQK3-QHR

James Vaughan first appears in Prince Edward Co. 20 September 1790 when he m. Sarah Mason, widow of Joseph Mason. See Prince Edward Chancery Cases: 1793.019, 1835.017, 1846.006. James paid personal taxes 1791-1806, at which time he most likely left the area. He was still alive in 1824. Prince Edward Chancery Case: 1835.017.

Matthew W. Vaughan, b. abt. 1817 was the son of Dr. Jack Vaughan and his wife Martha H. Ligon.

Nicholas Vaughan - LHJP-YN1

Nicholas Vaughan first appears in 1773 when he acquired 400 acres on the lower side of Sandy River (VA Prince Edward DB 05.352). At the time he was a resident of Nottoway Parish, Amelia Co. This is the area of Amelia Co. that later became Nottoway Co. By 1780 he was a resident of Prince Edward Co. He paid personal taxes 1782-1787; land taxes 1782-1793. One of his tracts straddled the Amelia Co. - Prince Edward Co. Line. Two deeds reveal he was married to Elizabeth as of 1786-1788. It appears that he moved back to then Nottoway Co. where he d. 1809-1816.

Richard Vaughan - KNSJ-1T1

Richard Vaughan appears to be the son of Thomas Vaughan, Sr., based upon personal tax digests. As there is only one Richard Vaughan in the tax digests, it appears he had three wives: Drusilla Rice 7 February 1793; Mary Ann (aka Miriam) Jackson, Widow of Josiah/Isaiah Jackson, 1 December 1798; and possibly Sally Oliver, as of 1809, 1818 (Prince Edward Chancery 1816.011, 1822.018 ).

Samuel D. Vaughan

Samuel D. Vaughan paid personal taxes in Prince Edward Co. 1839-1848.

Samuel W. Vaughan - KHJ3-PK6

Samuel W. Vaughan, b. abt. 1824 was the son of Dr. Jack Vaughan and his wife Martha H. Ligon. He m. Lucy T. Lockett 3 November 1846 in Prince Edward Co., Va.

Thomas Vaughan - G9S1-L7N

Thomas Vaughan first appears in 1750 when he purchased 525 acres from Abraham Vaughan of Lunenburg Co. (VA Amelia DB 04.016 ). Thomas sold the land in 1764 while a resident of Amelia Co. (VA Prince Edward DB 02.262). Thus Thomas is not Thomas who d. in 1752 in Amelia Co.

The next transaction was in 1770 when Thomas Vaughan purchased 200 acres (VA Prince Edward DB 04.012). By 1782, Thomas Vaughan, Sr. had 185 acres (net). In 1783, he acquired another 90 acres. From land tax digests, it is apparent he transferred to 90 acres to Thomas Vaughan, Jr., b. abt. 1767 (most likely his son). Both left the area after paying 1797 personal taxes. In 1797, Thomas, Sr. and his wife Mary sold the 185 acres (VA Prince Edward DB 11.162). This provides some proof that Thomas Vaughan, Sr. is the son of Thomas Vaughan who d. in 1751 in Amelia Co. (VA Amelia DB 11.056).

Other likely sons of Thomas, Sr. are John Vaughan, b. abt.1768, Claibourn Vaughan, b. ca 1770, James Vaughan, b. abt. 1770, Richard, b. abt. 1772-1773. Two daughters are: Mary Vaughan (who m. Jesse Brooks 8 October 1795) and Sally Vaughan (who m. John Piller 28 December 1797). Possible sons and estimated birth dates is based upon personal tax digests.

Only James and Richard remained in Prince Edward Co. after 1798.

William K. Vaughan

After that he moves to ______ Chuck, please add some more.
