General Comment - Thomas Vaughan This name has a lot of confusion associated with it in Pittsylvania Co. There is a Thomas Sr. and two Thomas Jrs. in early Pittsylvania Co. One Sr. and one Jr. appeared only three years apart in time. Thomas Sr. first traded a few deeds with John Vaughan. I suspect but can not prove that they were brothers and lived next to each other on Little Straight Stone Creek. When Thomas Sr. d. he only named one son Thomas Nathaniel Vaughan in his will. His 170 acres of land was kept in his estate for several years. This probably meant his wife was still alive, living on the property. Then in 1796 his 170 acres was sold by his executor Thomas to William Vaughan. As Thomas, Sr. did not name a son William in his will, I suspect, but can not prove that William is the son of John. William paid taxes on 170 acres during his lifetime. However, after he died several deeds refer to 196 acres (exactly ½ of the 392 acres originally granted John Vaughan! |
