MECKLENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA

VAUGHAN FAMILY WIKI

This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. Facts about where these early Vaughan family members moved to after they left Southside Virginia will be particularly welcome.

The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number.

Alfred aka Alford Vaughan - G93V-CJQ

Alfred aka Alford Vaughan was b. 1794-1800, the son of James Vaughan and his wife Mary Malone of Brunswick Co., Va. See DB 18.004 Brunswick County. His parents moved to Orange Co., N.C. by 1800. After they died, Alfred came to Mecklenburg Co. He paid personal taxes 1815-1834. Census records show he was married and had children, but there is no records there of the names of his wife or children. There is no record of him owning any real estate in Mecklenburg Co.

Ambrose Vaughan - L2WX-PTY

Ambrose Vaughan. There are two and perhaps three Ambrose in Mecklenburg Co. The elder Ambrose was b. before 1775 and died abt. 1826. He lived in Dinwiddie Co. in 1783 and Brunswick Co. 1793-1798 where he appeared in the personal digest, while also appearing in the land digest in Mecklenburg Co. His wife’s name was Martha as of 1830. One of his children was Leviston (Livingston?) Vaughan (VA Mecklenburg DB 13.459). Another apparent son was Berry Vaughan b. abt. 1783 (See personal tax digests.) His ownership of land from deeds and from land taxes do not match up well. Land taxes show he owned 179 acres. In 1826 he was deeded 102 acres, but his land holdings were increased by 202 acres. In 1832 his estate disposed of 230 acres leaving 151 acres. This land was on Wolf Pit. Br. He paid personal taxes 1799-1826, land 1786-1826 and his estate paid land taxes 1827-1840. His grandson Ambrose started paying taxes on the 151 acres of land 1n 1842.

Ambrose Vaughan - MN5V-YVQ

Ambrose Vaughan. The younger Ambrose Vaughan was the son of Livingston Vaughan (VA Mecklenburg DB 31.402) and the grandson of the elder Ambrose Vaughan. He was b. abt. 1816. He m. Elizabeth C. Dortch 17 Dec 1835 in Mecklenburg Co. and was still married to her in 1850.

Ambrose Vaughan

Ambrose Vaughan. There is one tax digest entry for an Ambrose in 1787 that also is marked as an estate! Some have thought that it was the father of Ambrose who d. in 1829. There is just not enough evidence to know if that is true. It could also be a son, depending on the age of the elder Ambrose.

Balaam Vaughan

Balaam Vaughan. See Lunenburg Co.

Binns Vaughan

Binns Vaughan. See Brunswick Co. - James Vaughan, of Yarbrough Cr.

David Vaughan. There are at least four to five Davids in Mecklenburg Co. Only three of them created any appreciable records. The records on these are a bit confusing.

David Vaughan, Son of Peter Vaughan - KCJT-RC1

David Vaughan was the son of Peter Vaughan, Sr. He was identified as the son of Peter in various tax digests and in his father’s 1842 will. He was. b. abt. 1786 and d. after 1850. He was m. to Philadelphia Griffin, dau of James Griffin, on 14 Dec 1807 in Mecklenburg Co. (VA Mecklenburg WB 8.163). He owned land on both sides of Great Buffalo Cr. He paid personal taxes 1807-1849 and land taxes 1821-1848.

David Vaughan, Son of Dr. Spencer C. Vaughan - LHRP-VM4

David Vaughan was the son of Dr. Spencer C. Vaughan, Sr. He was b. abt. 1800. He appears to have left the area after 1844. He was m. to Lettis Newton, dau of Robert Newton (VA Mecklenburg DB 22.152 & 23.038). He owned 27 ½ acres on Little Buffalo Cr. 1821-1826. He paid personal taxes 1821-1844 and land taxes 1821-1826.

David D. Vaughan - MQXP-Z1P

David Vaughan was b. abt. 1770-1775. He first appears in 1804 when he married Patty Kirks. He paid personal taxes 1805-1814, 1820, 1830-1838; and land taxes 1818-1820. His only deed was in 1838 when he sold ½ interest in unspeciafied acres to David Oslin. This land was likely inherited as he never paid taxes on this land.

Edmund H. Vaughan - KH22-W1P

Edmund H. Vaughan was the son of Thomas Vaughan (VA Mecklenburg DB 26.445). He was m. to Sally H. Walker 05 Jun 1809. He or his guardian John Wilson paid personal taxes 1811-1814 and land taxes 1805-1813. In 1825 he was a resident of Shelby Co. Tn. (VA Mecklenburg DB 26.445).

Ingram Vaughan - LH1L-3SM

Ingram Vaughan was b. abt. 1758. It is generally accepted (but not proven) that he was the son of Reuben Vaughan, Sr. He m. Ann Lewis 20 Aug 1785 in Mecklenburg Co. His children as of 3 Apr 1800 were Polly Bracey Vaughan, Betsy Carter Vaughan, Thomas Lewis Vaughan & Edward Bracey Vaughan (VA Mecklenburg DB 10.377). He paid personal taxes 1782-1805 and then moves to Halifax Co. where he paid personal taxes 1809-1820. His son Thomas L. Vaughan d. by 1817. See Halifax Co. Chancery Case 1825.059.

Jairus Vaughan - See Lunenburg Co.

James Vaughan - General Note

There are numerous James Vaughans found in Mecklenburg Co.

Prior to 1799. There are six James in Mecklenburg County during this period. In addition, a progenitor d. in 1750 in Lunenburg County prior to Mecklenburg County being formed. Also, a James of Granville District, NC owned 1.5 acres in Mecklenburg County. All, except the son of Willis died or left the area by 1798. There are two James that lived on Buffalo Cr. that are likely first cousins. Both are in Subgroup 5 Cyan of the Vaughan DNA Project. Fortunately, personal tax digests help us sort these out. If you are a descendant of James Vaughan of Oglethorpe Co., Ga. or William “T” Vaughan of Mecklenburg Co., Va. it is critical that you understand what the personal tax digests teach us. For the purposes of this analysis I will refer to them by the names of slaves they owned: Joe and Jacob. Tax collectors in large counties such as Mecklenburg Co often add a tag after some names to help them determine which taxpayer is which with the same given name. Just to really confuse the situation the tax collector tagged James [slave Jacob] “Buffalo” in 1787; and he tagged James [slave Joe] “Buffalo” in 1788. A few of the James’s are listed below. The rest are either readily distinguished in the Vaughan Roster or impossible to distinguish or in the Vaughan Roster

James Vaughan of Lunenburg Co.

James Vaughan of Lunenburg Co. was the progenitor of a large family in Mecklenburg Co. See Lunenburg Co. and Brunswick Co. for more details.

James Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan of Lunenburg Co. - G992-ZD8

James Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan of Lunenburg Co., owned 200 acres on Mountain Cr. which he inherited from his father James. He sold this land in 1767 and appears to have been the James that appears in a few deeds 1771 - 1778. After that he just disappears. It is possible he lived a low profile and is one and the same as James, Sr. that d. 1797. His estate is only noted in the 1795 - 1797 personal tax digest.

James Vaughan [Slave Joe]

James Vaughan [Slave Joe] appears in the 1782 personal tax digests. Joe appears under his name through 1788 after which James left the area. In 1788 James also paid taxes on a slave named Agg. This James moved to Laurens District, S.C. and then on to Oglethorpe Co., Ga. He d. there abt. 1796. (Oglethorpe County, Georgia Will Book A, p. 37) We know that this is the same James as he owned slaves Joe, Agg and Dinah at the time of his death. Citation. yDNA results support this conclusion. James [Slave Joe] carries the distinctive marker 22 in the DYS413 STR as does his apparent brother (or cousin) Alexander Vaughan. Two descendants of William “T” Vaughan have been tested and neither carry the 22 marker. James was married at least twice. The two marriages we know of were to daughters of James Wilkins. He had three older children followed by seven more children by his wife Susannah Wilkins. See a separate summary on James Vaughan for more details.

James Vaughan [Slave Jacob], Son of William “T” Vaughan

James Vaughan [Slave Jacob] also appears in the 1782 personal tax digests. He did not own Jacob at that time nor did he in 1783. James did not pay personal taxes under his own name in 1784 or 1785. James’s father William “T” Vaughan owned Jacob 1783 - 1785 and paid taxes on him. In his will dated 20 Mar 1785, William “T” Vaughan gave slave “Jacb” to his son James (VA Mecklenburg WB 02.149). James paid taxes on Jacob in 1786 and 1787 after which he leaves Mecklenburg Co. We know that James who owned Jacob is the son of William “T” Vaughan. We also know that he paid taxes for apparent sons William Vaughan and Sterling Vaughan in 1787. James was b. by 1748 as his father William paid a tithe for him in 1764 in Lunenburg Co. We know Sterling moved to Halifax Co. and James just disappears from Mecklenburg Co. He is likely one of the James’s in Halifax Co.

James Vaughan, Son of Reuben Vaughan - G935-MCV

James Vaughan was the son of Reuben Vaughan. He owned 80 acres in 1773 and 114 acres 1778-1780. He paid personal taxes 1787-1789 and land taxes in 1787 He was m. to Mary _____ (VA Mecklenburg DB 04.211).

James Vaughan, of Yarbrough Cr., Brunswick Co., Va.

See Brunswick Co. James Vaughan moved to Mecklenburg Co. and died shortly thereafter. His sons Moody Vaughan and Binns Vaughan split their time between Brunswick Co. and Mecklenburg Co. See Mecklenburg Chancery 1847-030.

Jane Vaughan - G935-CZV

Jane Vaughan was b. 1790-1800, the dau. of Peter Vaughan. She paid land taxes 1828-1848. In 1820, she, along with Peter Vaughan and John Vaughan witnessed a deed by Stephen Worsham, Trustee and Spencer C. Vaughan (VA Mecklenburg DB 19.131).

Jeremiah Vaughan - L4YM-63P

Jeremiah Vaughan was b. abt. 1771 and d. in 1792, the apparent son of Reuben Vaughan. Reuben paid his personal taxes in 1787. He paid personal taxes 1789-1791and his estate paid personal taxes in 1792. His wife’s name was Martha (VA Mecklenburg WB 03.123). He purchased 200 acres in 1790 (VA Mecklenburg DB 07.561). He is not to be confused with Jeremiah Vaughan, Son of Spencer C. Vaughan, who was much younger.

John Vaughan, Son of Reuben Vaughan - LRML-SQW

John Vaughan was an adult by 1778 when he witnessed a deed to his apparent brother James. He paid land taxes 1782-1788. There is no record of him purchasing land, nor did he pay personal taxes in the same time period. He was likely a non-resident. In 1817, while he was a resident of Spartanburg Dt., S.C., his father Reuben, then of Powhaton Co., Va. deeded 200 acres to him. There is no later deed by him.

John Vaughan, Sr., Son of William “T” Vaughan - LHN8-XY1

John Vaughan was b. by 1748 as his father William paid a tithe for him in 1764 in Lunenburg Co. He m. Amelia Jones, dau. of John Jones, Sr. (VA Mecklenburg WB 03.085). He was m. to her as of 1773-1813. He d. in 1813. He was the father of John Vaughan, Jr., William Vaughan, Stephen Vaughan (who predeceased him with children), Amelia Vaughan, who m. _____ Overby, Sarah Vaughan, who m. _____ Blank, Mary Vaughan, who m. Henry Green, and Susannah Vaughan, who m. _____ Arrington. John and Amelia lived on the Great Buffalo Cr. in the S.W. corner of Mecklenburg Co. He paid personal taxes 1782-1813 and land taxes 1782-1813. His estate paid personal taxes in 1814 and again in 1829-1831 and land taxes 1814-1815. Amelia Vaughan left a will naming the same children as her husband John, except she left off the children of Stephen Vaughan, dec’d. This could mean he was from a prior marriage.

John Vaughan, Sr. — Will of Henry Green - LVDP-BHK

This will really gets the imagination going, especially since a number of Sizemore descendants are genetically Vaughans. See also Chancery 1843-015. We owe a special thank you to Wallace Sizemore for his explanation of who a number of the parties were.

One Fourth of Estate to:

Lucinda Vaughan, dau of Zedekiah Vaughan

Note: Zedekiah Vaughan first appears in 1778 in Amelia County when Lewis Vaughan pays his tithe. He pays tax in 1782 and 1783 when he then moves to Charlotte Co., VA.  We know from Charlotte Co. marriages that he has two other daughters Winnifred and Elizabeth. He appears in the census of Charlotte Co through 1830 (age 71 to 80).

John Vaughan, Jr., Son of John Vaughan, Sr. and Amelia Jones - G93V-1KN

Draft summary and link to Franklin Co, GA

Leviston Vaughan - L2WX-GTF

Leviston Vaughan was b. in 1782, the son of Ambrose Vaughan (VA Mecklenburg DB 13.459). He d. after 1860. He m. Sally Allen 24 Dec 1809 in Brunswick Co. He paid personal taxes 1811-1850 and land taxes 1809-1846. He owned land on Wolf Pit Branch, Rocky Br. and Flat Cr.

Peter Vaughan, Son of William “T” Vaughan - GM5X-5XZ

Peter Vaughan, Sr. was likely b. just after 1748 as his father did not pay a tithe for him in 1764 in Lunenburg Co. From the personal tax digests we learn that Peter had sons Joshua, b. abt. 1775, Jordan, b. abt.1778, David, b. abt. 1786, and Peter Vaughan, Jr., b. abt. 1788. He paid personal taxes 1782-1826 and land 1782-1828. He first appears as a deed witness in 1769. In 1778 he purchased 143 acres on Buffalo Cr. from his father William “T” Vaughan. He added 7 acres in abt. 1804 and another 13 acres in abt. 1808-1809. In 1827 he gave 23 ½ acres to his dau. Jane. In 1829 he sold 70 acres to his son David Vaughan. In 1833 his son Peter Vaughan, Jr. starts paying taxes on the remaining 69 ½ acres owned by Peter, Sr.

He paid personal taxes 1809-1848 and land taxes 1819-1848. He does not appear in the 1850 Census of Mecklenburg Co., nor does he have an estate prior to 1850.

Pleasant Vaughan - KNSQ-8S1

Pleasant Vaughan was b. abt. 1794 and d. after 1880. He was the son of David Vaughan of Lunenburg Co. He was m. to Mourning E. Dance on 27 Aug 1822 in Lunenburg Co. He was still m. to her as of 1840. She d. before 1850. In his early years he split his time among Lunenburg, Charlotte and Mecklenburg counties. He paid personal taxes 1812, 1825-1848 and land taxes 1828-1830, 1833, 1835-1836, 1838-1850 in Mecklenburg Co.

Reuben Vaughan, Sr., Son of James Vaughan - LQR8-YBP

Reuben Vaughan, Sr. was the son of James Vaughan who d. in 1750 in Lunenburg Co. Internet sources show he was b. in Oct 1732 in Brunswick Co., Va. and d. 8 May 1817 in Powhatan Co., Va. The sources of these dates is from Alice V. D. Pierrepont, Reuben Vaughan Kidd, Soldier of the Confederacy. His wife was Elizabeth _____. Many believe her surname to be ___ as he named a son _____. He and his brother Stephen shared a patent in 1759 for 1795 acres on Anthony’s Br. & Pine Cr. (VPB 34.0411). He witnessed a deed in 1749 in Lunenburg Co. He appears in many deeds after that time. He lived in the portion of Lunenburg Co. that became Mecklenburg Co. when it was formed. He paid personal taxes 1782-1806 and land taxes 1782-1819 in Mecklenburg Co. The land taxes paid after he died were not marked as being paid by his estate. His children are said to have been:

James Vaughan, appeared in deeds with Reuben

See familysearch.org Family Tree for more details.

Reuben Vaughan, Jr., Son of Reuben Vaughan, Sr. - LQR8-Y64

Reuben Vaughan, Jr. was b. abt. 1768 in Lunenburg Co., Va., the son of Reuben Vaughan, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth. He. m. Alice G. _____ (VA Mecklenburg DB 23.208). He or his father paid personal taxes 1787-1791 in Mecklenburg Co. Then in 1798 he moved to Lunenburg Co. and paid personal taxes through 1830. He paid land taxes on 115 acres in Lunenburg Co. from 1805 to 1830. The 1830 taxes were marked that he then was from Madison Co., Al. Now here is a very curious anomaly. It appears that in addition to paying taxes in Lunenburg Co., he also paid personal taxes 1807-1822 in Mecklenburg Co. and land taxes 1815-1828 in Mecklenburg Co.. He also claimed a residence of Petersburg for some of those years. Dower releases on the sales of these properties in three different counties show his wife’s name was Alice.

Reuben Vaughan

Reuben Vaughan. Just to keep things confusing, there is yet another Reuben Vaughan who pays personal taxes 1798-1804 in Halifax Co., followed by 1805-1818 in Mecklenburg Co, and followed again by 1819-1846 back in Halifax Co.

Samuel Vaughan, Son of William “T” Vaughan - L1WJ-7JG

Samuel Vaughan was. b. after 1748, the son of William “T” Vaughan. Samuel was m. to Prudence at the time he made his will in 1797 in Ky. He paid personal taxes 1782-1787 and land taxes 1787-1792 in Mecklenburg Co. There is no record of him owning land in Mecklenburg Co. He did witness quite a few deeds for lands on Great Buffalo Cr. He lived in Wilson Co., Tn. abt. 1788-1790 (VA Mecklenburg DB 08.022). On 9 Oct 1797, Samuel Vaughan made his will naming wife Prudence, children Patty Vaughan, William Vaughan, Polly Vaughan, Claiburne Vaughan, Luke Vaughan, Dicey Vaughan, John Vaughan, Joel Vaughan, Samuel Vaughan, Chesley Vaughan, Peter Vaughan, Sally Vaughan, Betsy Vaughan. Washington County, KY, Will Book A, page 114, Katherine B. Elliott, Emigration to other states from Southside Virginia, Volume 1, page 62.

Spencer Crawford Vaughan (Doctor) - G93P-1H6

Spencer Crawford Vaughan was b. before 1775, the son of David Vaughan of the City of Petersburg, Va. (VA Petersburg Hustings WB 01.294). He d. abt. 1821 (VA Mecklenburg WB 09.244). His death resulted in three chancery cases 1826-060, 1832-041, 1832-023. At the time of his death he was. m. to Elizabeth Vaughan (VA Mecklenburg Chancery 1826-060). His children were David Vaughan, John Vaughan, Spencer Vaughan, Peter Vaughan & his wife Jane Vaughan, Edmund P. Overby & his wife Dulcena, Bethea Vaughan & Jery [Jeremiah] Vaughan (VA Mecklenburg Chancery 1826-060). [Note: Jane, wife of Peter Vaughan is listed as a respondent. This would indicate that she is the daughter of Spencer C. Vaughan and married Peter Vaughan who is not a descendant of Spencer C. Vaughan. If Peter was the son of Spencer C. Vaughan, there would be no need to list Jane.] [Note: Deed Book 24, page 425 Mecklenburg County shows that Robert Williamson died leaving widow Polly. They had a daughter Elizabeth that married {Doctor Spencer} Vaughan. Elizabeth and Doctor Spencer Vaughan had a son Jeremiah and a daughter Bethia Saylor Vaughan who married Warner Wortham. Accordingly, one wife of Spencer C Vaughan is known with a certainty. Also, Jeremiah is proven as a son of Spencer C. The "C" stands for Crawford (See Mecklenburg Co D.B. 9, p. 152). This hints that David Vaughan, father of Dr. Spencer married Winnefred Crawford. Dr. Vaughan also had a son Spencer Vaughan, Jr. per Mecklenburg Co. Personal Tax Digest 1815-1816. Jane married Peter G. Vaughan in Mecklenburg County. They also had a son named Spencer C. Vaughan.] He owned properties from 1796 on Davis or Davy’s Br. and Buffalo Cr. He paid personal taxes 1795-1821, land 1797-1809 and 1816-1821 and his estate paid land taxes 1822-1827.

Stephen Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan - 9KB1-YKR

Stephen Vaughan was the son of James Vaughan who d. in 1750 in Lunenburg Co., Va. He was m. to Mary _____ as of 1765-1771 (VA Mecklenburg DB 01.134 & 02.554). Nothing is known about his children. He and his brother Reuben shared a 1759 patent for 795 acres on Anthonys Branch, Pine Cr. (VPB 34.0411). He last appears deeding property in 1771.

Stephen Vaughan, Son of John Vaughan - LVD5-9SP

Stephen Vaughan was the son of John Vaughan (VA Mecklenburg WB 08.009). He was an adult by 1782. He d. before his father did in 1813. His will was probated in 1813 in Halifax Co. (Halifax WB 09.358). He had children but did not name them in his will. He was. m. to Druscilla Griffin, dau. of John Griffin (Halifax Co. Chancery 1807-033) and as of 1802 (VA Mecklenburg DB 11.197). He owned land on Great Buffalo Cr. and also in Halifax Co. He paid personal taxes 1782-1805 in Mecklenburg Co. and 1806-1813 in Halifax Co. He paid and land taxes 1788-1802 in Mecklenburg Co. and 1805-1811 in Halifax Co. There is an 1828 deed for 21 acres of Druscilla Vaughan. When his father d., 104 acres was set aside as dower and 150 acres was distributed among the 7 children (See land tax digests). The orphans of Stephen would have been entitled to 21 acres (1/7 of 150 acres). This is probably the same land.

Theodorick Vaughan - KNHZ-CC2

Theodorick Vaughan was b. abt. 1785, the son of James Vaughan & Mary Malone, of Orange Co. N.C. (See VA Brunswick DB 18.004) After they died, Theodorick came to Mecklenburg Co. He. d. after 1850. He m. Martha Beasly 16 Jan 1813 in Mecklenburg Co. He paid personal taxes 1814-1823 in Mecklenburg Co. and 1828-1837 & 1845-1849 in Halifax Co., Va.

General Comment William Vaughan

There are simply too many William to make much sense of anything.

William “T” Vaughan - LV56-47F

Preliminary Comments: (1) The “T” is not a middle initial. It comes from mark he used to sign documents. Accordingly, it is better form the refer to him as William “T” Vaughan and not William T. Vaughan. (2) Much information that has been passed around about him is totally unsubstantiated. It appears that he is from Dinwiddie Co. as are many of the members of Subgroup 5 Cyan Vaughan DNA Project. There are at least five William Vaughans living in Dinwiddie (Prince George) Co. abt. the time he may have been there. There is no evidence of who his father or mother was. Genetic evidence so far is that William Vaughan of Charles City Co. was a member of Subgroup 11 Orange Vaughan DNA Project. There is no evidence he was m. to a Julia, much less Julia Green. His supposed birth date of 1705 is likely 15 to 20 years too early. There is no evidence of the maiden name of his second wife Mildridge. It is most likely, early researchers either guessed wrong, or just made some stuff up. I urge each of you to update your family trees and remove such information from the Internet, unless you can prove where it is from with a credible source. Now let’s talk about what we do know.

William “T” Vaughan first appears in Lunenburg Co. receiving a patent in 1756 for 400 acres on Buffalo Creek (in present day Mecklenburg Co. In 1764 he paid tithes in Lunenburg Co. for himself and his two eldest sons John and James. That would have meant his sons were 16 years old. Assuming the eldest was let’s say 18 years old and he was m. at abt. 18-25 years old. He would have been b. abt. 1821-1828. We know he was m. to Mildridge by 1778 (VA Mecklenburg DB 05.211).

He paid personal 1782-1785 and his estate paid personal taxes in 1786. He paid land taxes 1782-85 and his estate paid land taxes 1787-1790. His widow Mildridge paid land taxes 1790-1806. Why taxes remained in her name after she had died is unknown.

Children of William “T” Vaughan
