£160. 25 acres owned by James Vaughan and 134.5 acres owned by Joel Chandler (where Joel Chandler now lives). Adjacent to William Wilkerson, David Chandler, Henry Green, James Wilkins, and William Vaughan. Witnesses: None. Recorded on _________. See T.L.C. Genealogy, Mecklenburg County, Virginia Deeds, 1779-1786, page 85.

1785 Land Tax Alteration. 134.5 acres transferred from James Vaughan and Joel Chandler to George Stovall. James Vaughan's share was apparently treated as 34.5 acres as he was taxed on 160.5 acres in 1787.

1787 Land Tax. James Vaughan paid tax on 160.5 acres. Clausel Clausel's Tax District Mecklenburg Co., Virginia.

1788 James Vaughan last appeared in the Mecklenburg County, Virginia Personal Tax Digest.

1790 Land Tax Alteration. 160.5 acres transferred from James Vaughan to John Hall. Clausel Clausel's Tax District Mecklenburg Co., Virginia.

1790 James Vaughan appears in the 1790 census of Laurens District, South Carolina.

1795 James Vaughan died in Oglethorpe County, Georgia leaving widow Susannah Vaughan.

Notes on James Vaughan:

1. James Vaughan had two wives. This fact is not very obvious, but is provable. James Vaughan names ten children in his will in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. Isaac David married Susannah the widow of James Vaughan. In his will in Madison County, Georgia, Isaac David left a bequest to the "children of my wife Susannah." Only the seven youngest children of James Vaughan shared in the bequest from Isaac David. Neither the three eldest children Sarah, Arabella and William nor their descendants received anything. This leads inescapably to the conclusion that the three eldest were not the children of Susannah Vaughan.

A major clue is the will of James Wilkins of Mecklenburg County, Virginia..

In his will dated 11 July, 1781, recorded 8 October, 1781, James Wilkins names the following:

Wife

Arabella

Children

Charles Wilkins, Martha Wilkins, Sukey (Susannah) Vaughan, Mary Wilkins, and Milly Newton

Granddaughter

Sarah Vaughan "now living with him"

This will fits perfectly with the fact that James Vaughan was married twice. Apparently, he first married a daughter of James Wilkins and had children Sarah, named in James Wilkins will; Arabella, named for James Wilkins wife; and William, named for James Vaughan's father. When his wife died, he married her sister Susannah Wilkins!

Note the similarity of names of the women in the two families:

2. James Vaughan died owning three slaves, Joe Agg and Dinah. The ownership of these slaves as shown in James Vaughan's estate papers also provides important corroborating evidence. In 1788, James Vaughan of Mecklenburg County, Virginia paid tax on slaves Joe and Agg. The same James Vaughan that owned slaves Joe and Agg and that left Virginia after being taxed in 1788 was consistently taxed in the same sub-district of Mecklenburg County as William Vaughan, Peter Vaughan, Samuel Vaughan, John Vaughan and James Wilkins (or his estate in later years). All owned land adjacent each other on Buffalo Creek.

JAMES VAUGHAN [Slave Jacob] Son of William “T” Vaughan

20 Mar 1785

In his will dated 20 March, 1785, recorded 13 February, 1786, William Vaughan names the following:

WifeMildridge

Children

Sarah Gregory, Samuel Vaughan, John Vaughan, James Vaughan, Peter Vaughan, Milarson Overby, Milly Chandler, Elizabeth Vaughan, Nanny Gregory, and Molly Hayes.

GrandsonWilliam Overby

Although there are four James Vaughan's in early Mecklenburg County, Virginia, it is readily apparent from deed and tax records that the James Vaughan that owned slaves Joe and Agg is NOT the son of William Vaughan. Mildridge may or may not be his mother.

In her will dated 7 June, 1789, recorded 10 October, 1791, Mildridge Vaughan names the following:

Children

Ambrose Gregory, Joseph Gregory (six children, not named)

Granddaughter

Lucy Hayes

From these wills it is readily apparent that Mildridge Vaughan was first married to _______ Gregory.

1787 James Vaughan (son of William, with slave Jacob) last appeared in the Mecklenburg County, Virginia Personal Tax Digest.
