LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA VAUGHAN FAMILY WIKI |
This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. Facts about where these early Vaughan family members moved to after they left Southside Virginia will be particularly welcome. The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number. |
Abraham Vaughan, Son of Nicholas Vaughan of Dinwiddie/Amelia Co. - Abraham Vaughan. He was one of the earliest settlers of Lunenburg Co. living in the portion that became Charlotte Co. See summary in Charlotte County for more details. |
Alford G. Vaughan aka Alfred P. Vaughan - K8SX-3KR Alfred P. Vaughan was deeded 115 acres of land by Reuben Vaughan in 1830, while both were residents of Madison County, Al. He continued to own the land and pay land taxes in Lunenburg County (as a non-resident) through from 1831 to 1846. |
Balaam Vaughan, Son of David Vaughan - KNYP-YY5 Balaam Vaughan was the son of David Vaughan from Lunenburg Co. (Lunenburg WB 08.515). He first appears in 1805 paying taxes in Charlotte Co. He moved around paying taxes in Lunenburg Co. and Mecklenburg Co., last paying taxes in Charlotte Co. in 1849. By 1850 he appears in the census in Charlotte Co. (b. 1788). He m. Polly Burnes, 12 Dec 1809 in Mecklenburg County. She was the daughter of William Burnes of Charlotte Co. (See also Charlotte Co. Chancery Case 1839.017). |
Bartholomew Vaughan - K8S5-DYH Bartholomew Vaughan was the son of Thomas Vaughan who d. in 1751 in Amelia Co. (VA Amelia WB 01.074). Bartholomew moved around quite a bit. In 1782 to 1786 he was in Amelia Co.; 1787 and 1788 in Halifax Co. ; 1789 in Lunenburg Co.; and 1790 in Nottoway Co., after which he disappears. |
Benjamin Vaughan, Probable Son of Craddock Vaughan Benjamin Vaughan first appears in the 1769 Tithe list. He appears in several deeds along the Meherrin R. from 1772 to 1785. He drops off the tax digests after 1782. He is possibly the son of Craddock Vaughan. |
Craddock Vaughan - LDTP-J1D Craddock Vaughan appears in Lunenburg Co. in 1764, just before Charlotte and Mecklenburg Counties were split off. He lived in the area that remained in Lunenburg Co. [The source of much of the information for this summary is from the Internet. I have not researched this to verify the facts, but the Internet facts appear to be well researched.] His family tree is very curious. Craddock can be found in Amelia County where there are numerous names with the Surname Craddock. He paid taxes in Amelia in 1762 and an agent paid taxes for him in 1765. Here is the interesting part. He married Parthenia, daughter of John William Jeter. “William” Jeter was married to Margaret Vaughan! They lived in Spotsylvania, King & Queen, Caroline, Essex Co. area. prior to moving to Amelia County. John William Jeter died in Edgefield County, SC. His wife Margaret Vaughan is said to be the daughter of Cornelius Vaughan and Elizabeth Shields. There is no apparent relationship between the two Vaughan families. Craddock was b. abt. 1738; and died in Lunenburg County in abt. 1807. He made his will on 7 Aug 1807 and it was accepted for probate on 11 Feb 1808. His will included land in Botetourt Co. and he devised everything to his wife Elizabeth for life and then to his daughters Susannah Biggers and Polley Vaughan. He also named a son Jairus [who married a dau. of Reuben Vaughan — yet another Vaughan connection!] He named his “trusty friend” James Vaughan as executor. James is identified as his son in Halifax Co. Deed Book 15.640. William Vaughan was surety for James Vaughan’s Executors Bond. Although not named in his will, Craddock Vaughan, Jr. and William Vaughan are strong candidates to also be his children. Craddock Vaughan bought and sold a few parcels in Halifax Co. while a resident of Lunenburg Co. Craddock reduced his land holdings in Lunenburg Co. from 300 acres in 1797 to 28 ½ acres in 1809, likely indicating advancing age or declining health. |
David Vaughan - LJP4-R1R David Vaughan is scheduled as being b. 1784-1794 in the 1810 Census; and before 1775 in the 1820 Census. There is only one David Vaughan in Lunenburg Co. in 1810, so that census has to be incorrect. He pays personal taxes in Lunenburg Co. from 1798-1825. His personal tax payments are consistent with him being in Amelia Co. 1782-1788; and Nottoway Co. from 1789-1795. He purchased 133 acres in 1797 (VA Lunenburg DB 18.004). He mortgaged the property in 1825; and it was foreclosed upon in 1826. He died in Luneburg in 1825 leaving sons Willis Vaughan (b.<1790), Balaam Vaughan (1788), Pleasant Vaughan (b. 1794), Robert Vaughan (b. < 1778), James Vaughan (b. <1781); and daughters Mary Vaughan (who m. Benjamin Perkins) and Elizabeth (who m. Benjamin Clark). His death resulted in two chancery cases (1828.062 & 1834.006). This David Vaughan is not the son of Abraham Vaughan of adjacent Charlotte Co. That David was in South Carolina by 1807. |
George Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan of Brunswick County - LKNL-Y39 George Vaughan was living in Brunswick County when Lunenburg was formed out of Brunswick Co. The area he lived in became part of Mecklenburg County when it was formed. See summary in Mecklenburg Co. for more details. |
George Vaughan - 99QL-42K George Vaughan first appears in the 1802 tax digest. He married Mary (Polly) Hardwick 13 Oct 1803. He died abt. 1806 naming only Mary in his will (VA Lunenburg WB 06.158A). |
Jairus Vaughan - LJ1F-PC9 Jairus Vaughan was the son of Craddock Vaughan. He m. Hannah Pines Vaughan, daughter of Reuben Vaughan. He bounced around living in Lunenburg, Mecklenburg and Halifax Co. from 1797 to 1809. He died in Franklin Co., Georgia (Franklin Co., GA Will Book C, Recorded 8 May 1829). I have not researched the intervening years. |
James Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan of Brunswick County - 9KB1-YKP James Vaughan was living in Brunswick County when Lunenburg was formed out of Brunswick Co. He died shortly thereafter in Lunenburg Co. See summary in Brunswick Co. for more details. Reuben Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan James Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan Stephen Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan All three of these sons of James Vaughan reached adulthood in Lunenburg Co. The area they lived in became part of Mecklenburg County when it was formed. See summary in Mecklenburg Co. for more details. |
James Vaughan, Son of Craddock Vaughan - LJ19-HQH James Vaughan is the son of Craddock Vaughan (VA Lunenburg WB 06.204A) and he may have lived in Amelia Co. in 1783 (VA Lunenburg DB 13.530). He pays land taxes consistently in Lunenburg Co. and never pays personal taxes there. His records in Lunenburg Co. are not sufficient to draw any further conclusions. |
Joshua Vaughan - LHJ1-RH2 Joshua Vaughan is a bit of an enigma. There is a Joshua Vaughan in Dinwiddie Co. in the Bristol Parish Register, b. 14 Dec 1722, the son of Daniel Vaughan and his wife Elizabeth. Joshua later married to Sarah _____. They had a son James b. in 1785 and a son Jesse, baptized in 1751. Joshua initially lived in the area that became Charlotte County near Abraham Vaughan (Orange DNA Group). Then he moved to Mecklenburg Co. near William T. Vaughan (Cyan DNA Group). Then he leaves Mecklenburg Co. to parts unknown. In 1765, he was granted 400 acres on both sides of Sanson's Fork of Horsepen Creek (present day Charlotte Co.) (VA PB 36.855). In 1777, he sold the 400 acres and his wife Sarah released her dower rights (VA Charlotte DB 04.038). Also in 1777, he purchased 100 acres on Little Buffalo Cr. near William “T.” Vaughan (VA Mecklenburg DB 05.116). The seller was James Wilkins. James Vaughan who was the son of William “T.” Vaughan married a daughter of James Wilkins. She d. and he married another daughter of James Wilkins. Joshua sold the land in 1784 and his wife Sarah released her dower rights (VA Mecklenburg DB 06.417). |
Pleasant Vaughan, Son of David Vaughan - KNSQ-8S1 Pleasant Vaughan was the son of David Vaughan (Lunenburg WB 08.515). He was b. in 1794 based upon the 1850 Census of Mecklenburg Co. He first appears in Mecklenburg Co. in 1812; then Lunenburg from 1817-1823; and then back in Mecklenburg from 1824 to 1850 (the last year checked). |
Reuben Vaughan - LQR8-Y64 Reuben Vaughan first appears in Lunenburg Co. in 1798. He paid taxes there through 1830, sometimes as Reuben Vaughan, Jr. In 1830 he deeded 115 acres of land in Lunenburg Co, to Alfred G. Vaughan. At that time they were both residents of Madison Co., Alabama. He had acquired the land 10 Sep 1804 from the estate of Jeffrey Russell (VA Lunenburg DB 20.070). There are a few too many Reuben Vaughans to definitively determine at this time who his father was. |
Robert Vaughan, Probable Son of David Vaughan - LK78-P7L Robert Vaughan, who is probably the son of David Vaughan named in his will (Lunenburg WB 08.515) appears in personal property tax digests in Lunenburg Co. from 1799-1809. In 1826, Robert was a resident of Henrico Co. (VA Lunenburg DB 27.150). [No record of him has been found there so far.] |
Thomas Vaughan - K2Y4-MZC Thomas Vaughan started paying personal taxes in Lunenburg Co. as a non-resident from 1830 to 1835; and land taxes from 1832 to 1833 on 686 acres. He continued to pay land taxes through 1850 (last year checked). He was a resident of Prince Edward Co. More to follow. |
Thomas H. Vaughan - LZG7-FMT Thomas H. Vaughan was the son of John Vaughan who d. ca 1812 in Amelia County. (See Amelia County Chancery Cases 1824-028 & 1829.005. See also Nottoway County Guardianship Return at Nottoway County WB 05.131.) He started paying land taxes in Lunenburg Co. from 1832 to 1833 as a non-resident. He was a resident of Nottoway Co. He was deeded the land by James Rucks and his wife Susan of Nottoway Co. The land was from the estate of Green W. Webb. (Thomas was believed to be m. to Mary Webb. This is consistent with this property being part of the estate of her father.) Starting in 1833, he paid personal taxes in Lunenburg Co. By 1841, he returned to paying personal taxes in Nottoway Co. |
William “T.” Vaughan William “T.” Vaughan The area he lived in became part of Mecklenburg County when it was formed. See summary in Mecklenburg Co. for more details. |
William Vaughan, Probable Son of Craddock Vaughan - LJ1F-2GB William Vaughan appears in the personal Tax digests from 1785 - 1807 (missing a few years). He and Reuben witnessed a deed in 1790. Craddock Vaughan paid his personal taxes 1785-1787, while he was a minor, which is highly suggestive he is a son of Craddock. |
Willis Vaughan - LCPY-VJD Willis Vaughan. He married Edith Gunn in 1778 in Amelia Co. After his marriage, deeds and personal property tax returns track Willis Vaughan’s movements quite nicely. He appears in Brunswick Co. 1782-1785; Lunenburg Co. 1787-1789; and Mecklenburg Co. 1794-1813. He is not the Willis that is the son of David of Lunenburg Co. |
