HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA VAUGHAN FAMILY WIKI |
This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. Facts about where these early Vaughan family members moved to after they left Southside Virginia will be particularly welcome. The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number. |

General Note: James Vaughan There are several James Vaughans in Early Halifax County. It is very confusing trying to figure out which is which especially since the tax collectors were not consistent with the tags they used. Please refer to the Tax Personal Analysis file for more details. |
James Vaughan (tagged AC for Aarons Cr.), son of William “T” Vaughan of Meckllenburg County James Vaughan moved to Halifax Co. from Mecklenburg Co. in 1788. He had several sons as evidenced by the tithes paid in the personal tax digests. Only the eldest William and Sterling are known based upon Mecklenburg Co. tax digests. His wife’s name is unknown. He paid personal taxes 1788-1804 and his estate paid personal taxes 1806-1807; and he paid land taxes on 99 acres 1798-1805. He d. abt. 1805-1806, but left no estate. His death is proven by the 1806-1807 personal tax digests. His land was on Reedy Br. of Aaron’s Cr. (Halifax DB 17.159, 20.515). |
James Vaughan - (Sometimes tagged D. Masters, DM, BC, Sr.) James Vaughan was b. before 1767 based upon the tax digests. He d. abt. 1827 (Halifax WB 14.428, 15.059, 17.641 & Halifax DB 31.603). He had two known sons: Craddock Vaughan (b. abt. 1795); and Milton Vaughan (b. abt. 1808). He paid personal taxes 1788-1827 and land taxes 1793-1837. He owned numerous tracts of land. James Vaughan of Peter’s Cr. James Vaughan of Peter’s Cr. is included herein due to a number of anomalies. He was granted a patent of 400 acres on Peter’s Cr. in 1774 (VA Patent 42.0581). He did not pay land taxes 1782-1793. He starts paying land taxes in 1794. He sells 200 acres in 1794 while a resident of Mecklenburg Co. He sells the remaining 200 acres in 1796, but continues to pay taxes on that 200 acres through 1803! Peter’s Cr. is very close to where William “T” Vaughan and his descendants settled. However, this James just does not match with anyone. Neither does this James match with any James in the personal tax digests of Halifax or Mecklenburg Counties. |
