DINWIDDIE COUNTY, VIRGINIA VAUGHAN FAMILY WIKI |
This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. Facts about where these early Vaughan family members moved to after they left Southside Virginia will be particularly welcome. The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number. |
Abraham Vaughan Abraham Vaughan. There are two Abrahams paying personal taxes 1784-1786; and one Abraham paying personal taxes 1787-1788. No attempt is made to distinguish the two. One pays land taxes on 100 acres in 1790. In 1790 an Abraham pays personal taxes in adjacent Brunswick Co. 1790, 1796-1803. He bought 226 acres on Gravelly Run in Brunswick Co. in 1802 and sold it in 1805, paying land taxes for years 1802-1805. Abraham disappears after that. He also appears in misc. estate records 1798-1804. He is likely a descendant of Richard Vaughan of Brunswick Co., but there is no hard proof of this. |
Absalom Vaughan - KNB1-SFF Absalom Vaughan pays personal taxes 1786-1839; and land taxes 1791-1839. In 1791 he acquired 20 acres on Halifax Rd. from Randolph Hawkes. In 1793 he acquired 100 acres on Halifax Rd. from Henry Vaughan. He acquired another 12 acres by 1799. He held on to 132 acres until he died in 1839; and he gave 62 acres to his son Hartwell Vaughan; and 70 acres to his dau. Martha Vaughan (VA Brunswick WB 02.375, Land Taxes). in 1797 and 1798 he transfers ownership of some property to Ephraim Vaughan. He reacquires his 132 acres from John Crofford in 1799. There was no transfer on the acres taxed to Absalom. In his will, in addition to Hartwell and Martha, he also named his wife Mathew (yes- that is exactly how it reads) Vaughan; and Rebetcher Ivy. (VA Dinw WB 02.375). Curiously, Peter Vaughan pays his personal taxes in 1787, but there is no records of Peter being his father. There is only one Peter in Dinwiddie Co, in 1787. |
Alfred J. Vaughan - 27G6-PKZ Alfred Jefferson Vaughan, Sr. was b. 28 Jul 1800 in Dinwiddie Co., Va. He was the son of Peter Vaughan and Martha Boisseau. On 6 March 1823, in Sussex Co., Va. he m. He was b. abt. 1820; and married Sarah Ellen _____ in the 1850 Census and as of 1853 (VA Dinwiddie DB 07.414). |
Benjamin J. Vaughan - G9SK-YZ9 Benjamin J. Vaughan was b. 9 Jul 1809 in Dinwiddie Co., Va. He was the son of Peter Vaughan and Martha Boisseau. He. d. 4 Aug 1873. They had a son Jefferson Archer Vaughan. |
Caleb Vaughan - MQKW-1Q1 Caleb Vaughan was b. in 1731, the son of William Vaughan and his wife Mabel. His estate was still open per the land tax records 1782-1804, which is generally indicative that his widow was still alive at that time. |
Claiborne Vaughan - 9XPZ-S1B Claiborne Vaughan was b. abt. 1788, the son of William Vaughan, Sr., tagged “Whead” in the tax digests. He d. after 1850, but before 16 Sep 1853 (VA Dinw DB 07.425). His wife was Eliza S. _____ at the time of his death. He appears in the tax digests 1806-1850, with a gap from 1813-1824 [War of 1812 soldier?]. He lived near Arthur’s Swp. and Vaughan’s Rd. |

He owned 438 acres at the time of his death in 1843. He left bequests to Benjamin Boisseau, Benjamin B. Vaughan and James B. Vaughan. It is known that Benjamin B. Vaughan and James B. Vaughan were the sons of Lemuel H. Vaughan and that Benjamin Boisseau was their grandfather. See Petersburg City Chancery Cases: 1835-021 & 1849-016. By 1848 Benjamin B. Vaughan, and James B. Vaughan were paying taxes on the land. It appears that Benjamin Boisseau had died about that time. See VA Dinw DB 07.010 for more details. |
Freeman Vaughan - G9SC-9QD Freeman Vaughan, b. abt. 1771-1777 was likely the son of Williams Vaughan. He paid personal taxes 1786-1814. He paid land taxes 1802-1814 on 108 acres on Cox Rd., which he acquired from Nancy Lamb, et al. When he d. his land was adjusted to 111 acres and kept in his estate for years to come. On 18 Nov 1839 William Vaughan & his wife Martha J. [Lamb] sold to William T. Green 38 ½ which had been taxed to the estate of Freemen Vaughan (VA Dinw DB 02.397). Thus, it appears that William Vaughan, was one of three children of Freeman. Freeman’s apparent widow was Frances Vaughan, After his death, she paid personal taxes 1817-1845. She also acquired, in her own right, 50 acres on Cox Rd. in 1821 from James Young and paid land taxes 1821-1846. She left a will naming grandsons: Freeman Vaughan, Jefferson Vaughan, William Vaughan and John James Vaughan. (None of these grandsons match the known sons of William Vaughan. None appear to reside in Dinwiddie Co. |
George C. Vaughan - GMGM-DDS George C. Vaughan was born Feb. 29, 1788 in Dinwiddie Co., VA; and d. Dec. 7, 1848 in Petersburg, VA. (FTDNA Kit 136804). His father was Herbert Vaughan (See 1829 Land Tax Digest). He married Laurana (Lourania, Laurena) Aldridge who was born Nov 30, 1797 and died Jan 17, 1860 in Dinwiddie Co, VA. (FTDNA Kit 136804). Hamlin E. Vaughan - GMX8-3PM |
Henry Vaughan Henry Vaughan had acquired 375 acres prior to 1782. In 1793 he transferred 100 acres to Absalom Vaughan. In 1795, about the time he died, he or his estate transferred 103 acres to Herbert Vaughan; and 50 acres to Archibald Smith. In 1801, his estate transferred another 50 acres to Archibald Smith; and in 1802 his estate transferred 50 acres to John Jones. There are other deeds not mentioned herein. His estate paid land taxes until 1805. He paid taxes for David Vaughan and Archer Vaughan in 1794 (Joshua paid for them in 1795). Joshua Vaughan is confirmed as a son of Henry (VA Peters DB 05.345). |
Henry Vaughan Henry Vaughan. A second Henry Vaughan (b. 1775-1784) paid personal taxes 1791-1823; and land taxes 1800-1829 (85 acres (from Ezekial Vaughan) 1800-1804; 82 acres 1805; 76 ½ acres (sold 5 ½ acres) 1806-1809; and 68 ½ or 68 acres (sold 8 acres) 1810-1828; and 62 acres (sold 6) in 1829. He left a will, but it did not survive. He left a life estate in his remaining 62 acres to Eliza M. Vaughan, who was likely his widow. She pays taxes in 1830 and 1831 and then disappears. Then after several years, his estate again pays tax on the 62 acres starting in 1840. In 1841 Roderick F. Vaughan transfers 1 acre to Jeremiah S. Whitehead; and in 1844 he transfers 31 acres to Mary Vaughan. This looks suspiciously like Henry died leaving a young son who grew up, had two children and then died making Roderick and Mary his grandchildren. Just a guess. |
Herbert Vaughan - GMZV-JGB Herbert Vaughan was b. before 1765. He pays personal taxes 1783-1823 in Dinwiddie Co. He also pays land taxes 1795-1828. He d. by 1828 and had a will. His will did not survive and no copy is available. We are, however, lucky in that we can piece together his children from land taxes and a later distribution of cash from his estate. His land transactions are remarkably in balance. In 1795, he acquired 103 acres on Vaughan’s Rd. from Henry Vaughan; in 1798 he acquired 7 acres; in 1803 he acquired 71 acres from Joshua Vaughan; in 1806, he acquired 113 acres; in 1813 he sold 8 acres; in 1814 he sold 18 acres; and in 1820 he acquired 23 acres from the Estate of William Conway. (He also acquired 40 acres from James G. Jones in 1822; and his estate sold or distributed 40 acres in 1828. The net balance of these transactions is 291 acres. He held these in two tracts in his tax records: one at 268 acres and one at 63 acres. The 268 acres was divided as follows: 108 acres dower to his widow Hannah; 40 acres to son Parham E. Vaughan; 40 acres to son John E. Vaughan; and 40 acres to son George C. Vaughan. The last 40 acres is unaccounted for. The 63 acre tract was given to son Thomas L. Vaughan. The distributions were made to his four daughters as follows: Sarah Gresham, Augusta, wife of John Smith, Martha G. Vaughan and Polly, wife of George C. Cole (VA Dinwiddie WB 02.080). |
Isham Vaughan Isham Vaughan. There are two Isham in early Dinwiddie Co. Figuring out which is which is critical to later analyses. The elder Isham Vaughan LZGW-8X was m. to Temperance. They had a dau. Wilmott Vaughan, b. 03 Mar 1732. The younger Isham LDNY-PT1 was b. 04 Feb 1725, the son of Daniel Vaughan and his wife Elizabeth. Subsequently there are as many as three Isham in adjacent Amelia Co. The elder Isham Vaughan appears in tithables lists from 1738-1777. The younger Isham Vaughan appears in tithables lists from 1748-1755. The third Isham Vaughan in Amelia Co. pays personal taxes in 1782 and 1783. This discussion is continued to Amelia Co. |
James Vaughan - G9SH-6HX James Vaughan was b. before 1765 (1810 Census). He owned 100 acres of land when the land tax lists started in 1782. He stayed on the land until he died abt. 1813-1819. His estate paid land taxes on the 100 acres through 1840. He had sons Peter, b. abt. 1773, Samuel, b. abt. 1781, and John, b. abt.1787. It is too difficult to determine which Peter was the son of Samuel. Samuel paid taxes until abt. 1820. John paid taxes through on the 100 acres from 1841 to 1849. John Vaughan mortgaged 70 of the 100 acres and lost it to foreclosure. He paid taxes on the remaining 30 acres in 1850. He did not appear in the 1850 census. |

James B. Vaughan - KL63-3Q9 James B. Vaughan was the son of Lemuel H. Vaughan. James B. was b, abt. 1823 based upon the 1850 census. He was m. Delia S. _____ as of 1852 (VA Dinwiddie DB 07.221). He inherited a tract from his father, which he split with his brother Benjamin B. Vaughan. They also inherited land from their grandfather Benjamin Boisseau. See Petersburg City Chancery Cases: 1835-021 & 1849-016. He was b. abt. 1823; and married Delia L./S. _____ in 1850 and as of 24 May 1852 (VA Dinwiddie DB 07.221). |

Jordan Vaughan - LD39-1TN Jordan Vaughan. Jordan J. Vaughan is named in the will of Willis Vaughan (loose will dated 1819 & filed with the court in 1821, but never probated). Willis was the son of Williams Vaughan. Willis had sons Jordan J., Robert and a dau. Rebecca. Willis owned 90 acres on Gruby Road when he died. After his widow’s dower, his children would inherit 60 acres. Flash forward to 7 Jun 1849 and review VA Dinwiddie DB 05.261, wherein Jordan Vaughan & his wife Betsy; and Martha Vaughan, widow of Robert Vaughan, dec’d deed 57 acres on Gruby Rd. to James Gee. My sixth sense tells me this is Jordan and his brother’s widow deeding land to his sister’s husband. No proof. Just a thought. Jordan paid personal taxes 1827-1850; and land taxes 1831-1850. He was b. in 1802 per the 1850 census. |
