BRUNSWICK COUNTY, VIRGINIA VAUGHAN FAMILY WIKI Note: These families are a little tricky to follow due to migration coupled with dramatically changing county
boundary lines. |
This document provides a summary of selected Vaughan Family Members. The purpose of this file is to (1) summarize family groups when possible; (2) provide insight to help distinguish between family members with the same given name appearing at about the same time as each other; (3) pull together records of family groups that cross county lines; (4) point out where certain family members that changed counties came from or went to; and (5) draw some conclusions, both obvious and non-obvious based upon factual evidence. Speculation and theories will be kept to a minimum to avoid turning today’s speculation into tomorrow’s fact. Should you have comments to add, please submit them to davidhr@hushmail.com. Facts about where these early Vaughan family members moved to after they left Southside Virginia will be particularly welcome. The letters and numbers code after a name is the www.familysearch.org Family Tree ID Number. |
Abraham Vaughan, Son of Richard Vaughan - G99L-VRG Abraham Vaughan. Abraham died in 1748 in Brunswick Co. (VA Brunswick WB 02.177). He m. Loveday_____ His children were: Richard, aka Richard the Younger Abraham, Martha (m. John Westmoreland?) Mary Anne Rachel Sarah |
Abraham Vaughan, Jr., Son of Abraham Vaughan, Sr. - LVN4-M2M Abraham Vaughan, Jr. first appears in a 1765 deed selling 70 acres (inherited from his grandfather Richard? His share of the land was 63 3/4 acres.). Then he witnesses deeds in 1789 and 1794. In 1802 he acquires 226 1/4 acres, which he sold in 1805. His wife Michelle released her dower rights at DB 19.450. He is likely a resident of Dinwiddie Co. in the intervening years. It appears that he moved to Lunenburg Co. where he disappears after 1807. |
Averett Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan “Overseer” - 9KX4-2K1 Averett Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan. We do know Averett Vaughan was the son of James Vaughan who acquired 153 acres in 1817 as that is the James that d. in 1835. Averett Vaughan was b. 1795 (1850 Census). He died after the 1850 Census. His first marriage was to Sally Ogburn 15 Apr 1816. We also know he had a wife Elizabeth Ogburn, dau. of Benjamin Ogburn (sisters or the same person?) [Brunswick Co. Chancery Case 1843-001.] The Chancery case identifies his children as: Thomas H. Vaughan, 1842-1846, of Pontotoc Co., Ms. Richard J. Vaughan Robert Vaughan aka Robert B. Vaughan William J. Vaughan Eliza A. Vaughan who m. Gilliam Daniel 23 Jul 1838 in Brunswick Co. George Vaughan who died a minor, without issue [Note: The following was shared on Facebook by Ric Vaughan: Elizabeth was Averett M.'s first wife and she died in childbirth, sixth child. He later married Wilmouth Moon and fathered six more children. My grandfather, Peter Paschal Vaughan was born on August 7 (my birthday), 1846? In the late 1850s, he sold most holdings in Virginia and moved to Magnolia, AR. Buried in Magnolia City Cemetery. One son, Averett Lee Vaughan, and Wilmouth Vaughan, returned to Virginia. Wilmouth moved to Richmond and died in 1865. Averett Lee moved to Statesville, NC where he's buried.] |
Benjamin J. Vaughan - LHZM-88L Benjamin J. Vaughan m. Betsy Vaughan, widow of Lewis Brunett. Betsy Vaughan m. Lewis Burnett on 8 December 1806, in Greensville County (consented by Polly Vaughan). It is presumed that Elizabeth “Betsy” Vaughan was under the age to marry without consent in 1806. This would estimate a birth date for her of 1786-1792. Lewis Burnett d. abt. 1814-1815 in Brunswick County, Va. (LVA Reel No. 23, Will Book 8 (1824-1828), Page 143.) His father John d. a few short years later. His widow Elizabeth Burnett then m. Benjamin J. Vaughan on 26 Jan 1818 in Brunswick. An educated guess is that they were cousins, but there is no proof. The marriage being in Greensville Co. is a hint in and of itself. The Vaughan family in Greensville Co. is close to being figured out and there is not a Polly Vaughan that we know if. It is possible, she “eloped” to the adjacent county with the assistance of her mother. Because of the fact Betsy is later clearly in Brunswick Co., we have focused on that county as the likely place where she lived. Benjamin Jones Vaughan appears in the personal tax digests in Brunswick County from 1816-1820 (except for 1817 which is not extant). In 1816, he used his middle initial J. In 1818 he spelled out a middle name Jones. In 1820, he did not use a middle name or initial. There is no Benjamin J. Vaughan in the 1820 census of Brunswick County. There is, however, a Benjamin G. Vaughan (b. 1794-1802) in 1820. The discrepancy is likely a scrivener’s error by the census taker. If you assign a birth date of 1794-1795 to Benjamin, the census and the tax digests are consistent. His apparent wife in the census was b. 1794-1804, or 1775-1794. There are a few extra adult females in the family. It is known that David P. Burnett, Louisa Burnett & Martha L. Burnett, were the minor children of Lewis Burnett. They would have been under 16 years old in 1820. There is one male (10-16) and three females (0-10) in that 1820 census record which is entirely consistent with the three orphans of Lewis Burnett and a new daughter b. to Benjamin Vaughan and Betsy. It is known that Benjamin and Betsy had a daughter Parmelia Caroline Vaughan, b. 7 Jan 1819, but it is thought she was b. in Tn. There is no Benjamin Vaughan in Tn. in 1820. In 1821, Elizabeth Vaughan Burnett Vaughan and Benjamin J Vaughan move to Danville, TN on the Stone River. This is from the Obituary of Liza Burnett Nelson written in 1904. The Stone River is near Murfreesboro, Rutherford County. Danville might be in Houston County. In 1824, Elizabeth “Betsy” Vaughan Burnett Vaughan and Benjamin J .Vaughan move to Nolansville, Rutherford, TN [Proof?] In 1827, Lewis Burnett and Elizabeth Vaughan Burnett’s daughter Eliza “Liza” Louisa Burnett marries Judge James Nelson, White County, Illinois. Also in 1827, Benjamin J Vaughan is involved in land records for White County, IL [Book and Page?]. Benjamin Vaughan appears in the 1830 census for White County, IL. Benjamin is scheduled as being b. 1800-1810 (which appears to be too young; and Betsy is scheduled as being b. 1790-1800 which is consistent. Both Benjamin and Betsy d. in 1838 in White Co., IL [Source Needed] See Polly Vaughan below. |

David Vaughan - KL2F-1QD David Vaughan first appears in a 1767 deed. He was m. to Hannah Lester Hightower, widow, dau. of Andrew Lester 17 October 1781. He paid a tithe in 1762 and personal taxes in 1782 in Brunswick Co. In 1791 he joined in a deed with the heirs of Andrew Lester. He sold the property through a power of attorney and his location at that time is unknown. He may be one and the same as David Vaughan (G99G-WVR) the son of James Vaughan of Yarbrough Cr. |
George Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan - LKNL-Y39 George Vaughan. George first appears in 1735 probating his father’s estate in Brunswick Co. The inherited 200 acres from his father and 115 acres from his mother. In 1747 he was granted 290 acres on Eagle’s Nest Cr. (VPB 28.0224). His land was cut into Lunenburg Co. when it was formed. He paid tithes in Lunenburg Co. 1748-1764. From various deed records we learn he was m. to Agnes _____. Then his land was cut into Mecklenburg Co. There are a number of records for him in Mecklenburg Co. (his last deed being in 1777), but no estate or children are found. He just disappears. He does not appear in any tax digest there from 1782 on. 250 Acre Patent South Side of Little Creek As mentioned above, George’s father received a 250 acre patent in 1719. He sold 50 acres and he willed the remaining 200 acres to his son George. Three patents were issued adjacent to this patent: Thomas Jackson, 325 acre, VPB 12.0178; Ambrose Jackson, 510 acres, VPB 14.0506; and John Allen, 780 acres, VPB 18.0306. All three of these patents expressly recited they were adjacent James Vaughan. The third patent was issued after James Vaughan had died and the property was willed to George Vaughan. That is normal that there is a lag before the new owner is stated. There is no deed of George selling this tract. Also, no estate record for George has been found. Now, here is an interesting fact. In 1772 two patents were issued to Augustine Willis, also adjacent to the 250 acre tract (400 acres, VPB 40.826; and 59 acres, VPB 41.053). Both of these recited they were adjacent Vaughan. Plenty enough time passed for the adjacent owner to be accurately reflected in the new patents. So, it appears a Vaughan still owned this land. In 1752, William Vaughan, then of Charles City Co., bought 200 acres out of the 510 patent originally to Ambrose Jackson (VA Brun DB 05.297)! He is in a number of transactions for lands on Little Cr. Now this begs the question. What about the 200 acres owned by George Vaughan, for which there is no transfer. The deed out of George Vaughan may simply have not been recorded. We know George Vaughan had moved a little bit further west. If George Vaughan d. intestate in another county, his land in Brunswick Co. would pass automatically to his eldest son under the rules of intestacy at that time; and there would not be any need to record anything in Brunswick Co. Is William the son of George? This still leaves the confusion that William Vaughan was of Charles City Co. in 1752 (VA Brun DB 05.297); and was of Southampton Co. in 1760 (VA Brun DB 06.630). Additional research is needed. |
George Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan of Yarbrough Cr. - MFL8-LKG George Vaughan. From the marriage dates of his children, he was b. abt. 1755-1760. He may have been b. by 1746 (VA Brunswick DB 11.138). George Vaughan d. 1812 in Brunswick Co. (VA Brunswick WB 08.031; VA Brunswick WB 08.033; and VA Brunswick Chancery Case 1822.003). At the time of his death he was m. to Sarah _____ (See VA Brunswick DB 22.408). His children were: John H. Vaughan (From tax digests, b. ca 1786). He lived in Brunswick Co. 1807-1844. He m. Rebecca Drake 9 Jan 1804 in Brunswick Co. Martha Vaughan (alive in 1846) m. Josiah Nolley 23 Mar 1804 in Brunswick Co. Lucy Vaughan (alive in Brunswick Co in 1850) m. Isaac Brett 24 Feb 1829 in Brunswick Co. Catharine Vaughan (alive in 1846) m. Thomas Drake 12 Aug 1802 in Brunswick Co. Silvia Vaughan (alive in 1846) m. Robert Patterson 30 Mar 1814 in Brunswick Co. |
Herod / Harwood Vaughan - LDJV-228 Herod Vaughan was b. abt. 1794-1802. He paid personal taxes 1783-1814 & 1818-1824. He does not appear in any deeds, nor does he pay any land taxes. On 14 March 1820 he m. Sarah Vaughan, dau. of John H Vaughan. He later lived in Bedford Co., Tn. He is not to be confused with an older Herod Vaughan who m. Dicy McKenny. |
Irene Vaughan, Daughter of William who died in 1800 in Brunswick Co. - G99G-L2F Irene/Rhena/Irena Vaughan. Irene Vaughan never married She died in 1834. She paid taxes in Brunswick Co. on 42 ½ acres from 1812 to 1819. Then she paid taxes in Brunswick Co. on 78 acres from 1820 to her death in 1834. There is no deed to explain the increase of 35 ½ acres. Her will left property to: Nephew John Avery; niece Polly Wynee; nephew Raleigh Abernathy; Thomas Wynne; John Clayton; Alexander Mallory; nephew William V. Avery; Eleanor Lanier; niece Polly Lanier (VA Brunswick WB 12.228). [Note: Further investigation into these nieces and nephews may lead to the name the wife of Irene’s father William.] |
Counting the James There are at least eight major James Vaughans in early Brunswick County. The first two are James, son of William of Charles City County and his son James. Both died or left the area early on. The Land Tax Digests starting in 1782 reveal James “Buck”, James “Overseer”, James of Yarbrough Cr. and James of Reedy Cr. There may have been more, depending on how you count heads. |
James Vaughan, Son of William Vaughan of Charles City Co. - 9XPZ-S1K James Vaughn. James first appears in Prince George Co. in the 1704 Quitrents paying taxes on 169 acres, his share of his father’s estate. He was m. to Ann _____. He sold his 169 acres in 1717; and Ann released her dower rights. In 1719, he was granted 250 acres on the south side of the Little Creek in Surry Co. (present day Greensville Co.). This tract is near Emporia, Va. In 1727, his son James Vaughan, Jr. (of Surry Co.) was granted 378 acres on the north side of S. fork Reedy Creek in present day Brunswick Co. (VPB 13.116). This tract is near Hwy. 58, Edgerton and Pappy Ellis Field, just east of Lawrenceville, Va. He d. in 1735 in Brunswick Co. (VA Brunswick WB 01.216). In 1736, he was posthumously granted 115 acres on the North side Mehherin River in Brunswick Co. (VPB 17.196). Eventually, son George received 200 of the 250 acre tract and the 115 acre tract; and son James (who must have shared the 378 acres with his father) received that tract. James Vaughn George Vaughn Tabitha Vaughn Winne Curoks(?) Mary Markdavill (McDaniel?) Joshua Winn |
James Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan - 9KB1-YKP James Vaughan. James was an adult by 1727, hence he was b. by 1706. He first m. Mary Taylor, dau. of Edward Taylor (d. 1708 Surry Co.) and Margaret _____. After Edward died, Margaret m. William Harris (See notes in deeds of Brunswick Co. for James Vaughan, Jr.) Mary died and by 1743 he had m. Rutha _____ (VA Brunswick DB 02.313). His land was cut into Lunenburg Co. when it was formed and he d. there in 1750 (Lunenburg Co. DB/WB 01.484). In 1741, James acquired 200 acres on the south side of Maherrin River and upper side of Mountain Creek. This land was cut into Lunenburg Co. and then into Mecklenburg Co. His children were: James Vaughan (b. 1732-1743). James appears in a few deeds in Mecklenburg Co. 1767-1778. No further information. Reuben (b. abt. 1729). Stephen (b. 1732-1743). Stephen appears in a few deeds in Mecklenburg Co. 1765-1771. His wife’s name was Mary. No further information. Suro? |
James Vaughan, Son of William who died in 1800 in Brunswick Co. James Vaughan was given slaves by his father in 1796 and 1798 and was his executor in 1800. There is no James in Brunswick County that appears to match with him. |
James Vaughan, of Yarbrough Cr. - G99G-JD7 This line is being assembled primarily based upon Mecklenburg Co. Chancery Case 1847-030. Although James Vaughan was highly likely to have been in Brunswick Co. earlier, he is clearly identified living on Yarbrough Cr. before moving to Mecklenburg Co., hence he is referred to herein as James Vaughan, of Yarbrough Cr. James Vaughan. James Vaughan was b. abt. 1730-1745. He d. abt.1798 in Mecklenburg Co. He was married to Lucy as of 1779 (See several deeds) and at his death. The Chancery case was about 100 acres he bought and lived on in Mecklenburg Co. No deed has been found for this land, nor were any land taxes paid under any Vaughan. His children were: Moody Vaughan (dec’d. in 1846). From tax digests, he was b. 1771-1776. Tax digests show him living in Brunswick Co. 1792-1815; and Mecklenburg Co. 1816-1822. Moody m. Polly Lett 11 July 1800 in Brunswick Co. He was still m. to her at his death. He had a daughter Fanny who was alive in 1846. David Vaughan (alive in 1846 100 years old?). He may have been b. by 1746 (VA Brunswick DB 11.138). No further details. Ishmael Vaughan (From tax digests, b. ca 1772). Tax digests show him living in Brunswick Co. 1792; Mecklenburg Co. 1802; Halifax Co. 1816-1818; and Halifax Co. 1829-1835. No further details. George Vaughan. George Vaughan d. 1812 in Brunswick Co. Binns Vaughan d. 1824 in Brunswick Co. (VA Brunswick WB 09.367) . Binns moved back and forth between Brunswick Co and Mecklenburg Co. He was in Brunswick Co. 1804-1823; and Mecklenburg Co. 1797-1817. His children were: John Vaughan, Rebecka E. Vaughan & Nancy Vaughan. Macajah Vaughan. He lived in Brunswick Co 1796-1822. No further details. Sally Vaughan (dec’d. in 1846). Her children were: Alexander W. Vaughan & Mary B. Thompson Rebecka Vaughan. No further details. Mary Vaughan (alive in 1846). No further details. Pricilla Vaughan. No further details. |
James “Buck” Vaughan - MY9X-Q98 James “Buck” Vaughan. The name “Buck” comes from the tag given him in tax digests to distinguish him from the other James’s in the tax digests. At some time prior to 1782 James acquired 166 acres. No deed has been found. He m. Susanna Garrot 3 January 1807 in Brunswick County. He d. in 1811 (Brunswick WB 07.464). His death resulted in four Brunswick Co. chancery cases: 1812.007, 1817.021, 1824.042 & 1826.042. His children were: Robert Vaughan James Vaughan Kinchen Vaughan m. Tabitha Peebles, dau. of Lewis Peebles. Kinchen and his wife Tabitha moved to Guilford and later Rockingham Co., North Carolina. He died and then she died. Both Kinchen and Tabitha were deceased by 28 Oct 1817. His children were James P. Vaughan, Eliza J. Vaughan, Alvis Vaughan, Dearborn Vaughan, Emily Vaughan. William Vaughan m. Hannah Bruce 23 Mar 1812 in Brunswick Co. Susanna Vaughan, m. Liles E. Abernathy 21 Mar 1820 in Brunswick Co. Salley Vaughan (a minor in 1811) m. Samuel M. Harris 23 Feb 1818 in Brunswick Co. Polly Vaughan [dec’d.] m. Frederick Bass 22 February 1797. They had daughters Elizabeth M. Bass & Polly Bass James’s Widow Susannah d. in 1824 (Brunswick WB 09.378). She named some of his children and grandchildren as hers. However, none could be her descendants as she married “Buck” only four years before he died. Her death resulted in one Brunswick Co. chancery case: 1826.042. |
James Vaughan, of Reedy Cr. James Vaughan. Land tax records show this is yet another James Vaughan in Brunswick Co. (1783 alteration, 1787, 1788). James Vaughan lived on Reedy Cr. as early as 1771. He acquired 118 acres of land in 1785 and sold it (112 acres) in 1790, at which time he was m. to Anne _____ and they lived in Granville Co., N.C. (See various deeds.) |
James Vaughan “Overseer” - G9SM-3JL James Vaughan. James Vaughan d. 1835 in Brunswick Co. James first appears in the 1782 Personal Tax Digest of Brunswick Co. From about 1785 to 1796, he paid taxes on 100 acres as overseer for Thomas Stith. Then in 1798, he purchased 100 acres on Gum Br., which he later sold in 1816. In 1817 he acquired 153 acres, which he added to over the years, owning 373 acres at his death in 1835. [There is no absolute proof that each of these tracts above mentioned are owned by the same person, but it fits together rather nicely.] [Note: The 100 acre tract on Gum Cr. has a very interesting history in the Brunswick County Land Tax Digests. George Vaughan acquires this tract in 1780. George Vaughan does not pay tax on this tract in 1782. It then shows up in the 1783 Alterations List. Then in the May 1, 1785 to May 1, 1786 Alterations List taxation is transferred to James Vaughan, Jr. There is no deed on record of this transfer. Then in 1796-1797 Alterations List taxation is transferred from James Vaughan (with no Jr.) back to George. George pays taxes on the land in 1797. Again, there is no deed on record of this transfer. Then in 1796 George deeds the property outright to James Brunswick Co. D.B. 16.352 . James resumes paying taxes on the tract in 1798. George dies intestate in 1813. In 1814 a number of the children of George enter into an agreement to care for Sarah, widow of George. James is not one of those children. James continues to own the 100 acres tract until he sells it in 1816. James only lists himself as Jr. in the 1784 Personal Property Tax Digest. James lists himself as “Overseer” (or simply “O”) for Thomas Stith from 1787 to 1796 in the tax lists. Thomas Stith appears in a number of documents along with James Vaughan who married Susannah Hicks (not to be confused with James “Buck” Vaughan who married Susannah widow of Humphrey Garrett.] This is where the analysis gets a little messy. From Mecklenburg Co. Chancery Case 1847-030, we know George did not have a son named James and that his father James moved to Mecklenburg Co. George did have a brother named James. However, except for Hannah, there is not a match from his children from his estate in 1835 with the children of James, brother of George in the Mecklenburg Co. Chancery Case. For now let’s stick with what we do know. James’s children (and a few grandchildren) from his will are as follows: Hannah m. Jesse Peterson 20 Dec 1805 in Brunswick Co. (Granddaughter Susanna Peterson) Mary Elizabeth “Polly” or “Betsey” Vaughan. She m. Henry Sadler 10 Jan 1810 in Brunswick; Averett Vaughan, b. 1795 (1850 Census). He died after the 1850 Census. (Granddaughter Eliza Vaughan, daughter of Averett) Julia Vaughan m. _____ Dunn. [Julia Vaughan m. Haley Dunnivant 9 Mar 1822 in Brunswick Co. [Note: Dunn and Dunnivant appear to be one and the same.] [Note: Please refer to James Vaughan and his wife Susannah Hicks in VA Brunswick DB 14.169. Compare that to the 153 acres owned by James in which was sold to him by Jordan Hicks and his wife Lucy Hicks (VA Brunswick DB 23.134). This could be a complete coincidence, but it is worth noting.] Kinchen Vaughan, Son of James “Buck” Vaughan. Kinchen Vaughan m. Tabitha Peebles, dau. of Lewis Peebles. Kinchen and his wife Tabitha moved to Guilford and later Rockingham Co., North Carolina. He died and then she died. Both Kinchen and Tabitha were deceased by 28 Oct 1817. Their children were: James P. Vaughan Eliza J. Vaughan Alvis Vaughan Dearborn Vaughan Emily Vaughan |
James Vaughan - LC2C-H86 James Vaughan m. Mary Malone on 27 October 1783. They lived in Orange Co., N.C. as of Jun 1800 when Mary’s father deeded a slave to their children (VA Brunswick DB 18.004). Their children were: Rebecca Vaughan, Sally Bass Vaughan, Nancy Vaughan, Theodorick Vaughan, Alford Vaughan, Elizabeth Vaughan & Hiram Vaughan. Later Theodorick and Alfred Vaughan showed up in Mecklenburg Co., Va. |
Jesse Vaughan - G9SM-JY5 Jesse Vaughan. Jesse Vaughan was b. abt. 1757 (1840 Census). He d. in 1844 (Brunswick WB 14.236). He first appeared in Brunswick Co. in 1826. Prior to moving to Brunswick Co., he paid taxes for many years in Dinwiddie Co. His two known children are: John M. Vaughan, b. 1790-1800 (1840 Census), first appears in the 1831 tax digest of Brunswick Co.; and Patience Vaughan. She m. John E. Avery on 17 Oct 1836 in Brunswick Co. |
John H. Vaughan, Son of George Vaughan - L7NF-DMZ John H. Vaughan, b. abt. 1786 (based upon tax digest) was the son of George Vaughan. He m. Rebecca Drake 9 Jan 1804. He had to have been previously married as he had a dau. Sarah Vaughan who m. in 1820. John paid personal taxes 1807-1843 and land taxes 1826-1831 & 1838-1844. He and Rebecca appear in a number of deeds 1819-1842. |
John M. Vaughan - G9SM-X91 John M. Vaughan was b. abt. 1792 in Dinwiddie Co., the son of Jesse Vaughan. He was m. to Agnes _____, b. abt. 1810 based upon 1840-1842 deeds and the 1850 census. He paid personal taxes 1831-1849 and land taxes 1837-1841. They have no known children. |
Kinchen Vaughan, Son of James “Buck” Vaughan - KP49-TWM Kinchen Vaughan was the son of James “Buck” Vaughan and m. to Tabitha _____. Both were living in of Guilford and Rockingham Co., NC and were deceased by 1817. Their five children were: James P. Vaughan, Eliza J. Vaughan, Alvis Vaughan, Dearborn Vaughan, Emily Vaughan. See VA Brunswick DB 23.457. See also Brunswick Chancery Case 1817-021. |
Micajah Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan, of Yarbrough Cr. - L4H7-WF6 Micajah Vaughan was b. before 1775. He m. first to Delila McKenny on 10 October 1791; and second to Dicey Walker 25 September 1816. He paid personal taxes 1796-1815 & 1818-1822; and land taxes on 16 acres 1809-1817 |
Moody Vaughan, Son of James Vaughan, of Yarbrough Cr. - LCPH-FBK Moody Vaughan paid personal taxes 1792, 1799, 1809-1815. He never owned any land or paid any land taxes. He m. Polly Lett, widow of William Lett 11 July 1800. John Duggar Jr. named a dau. Polly Vaughan in his will. There are enough connections to suggest, but not prove, that Polly Duggar first m. William Lett and then later m. Moody Vaughan. Moody and Mary Vaughan had one dau. Fanny Vaughan. See Mecklenburg Chancery Case 1847-030. |
Polly Vaughan John Duggar, Jr. made his will in 1801 naming dau. Polley Vaughan. (VA Brunswick WB 06.389). Moody Vaughan m. Polly Lett, [widow of William Lett] on 11 Jul 1800. William Lett died 1796-1900 in Brunswick Co. Abraham, Binns, James, David, & George Vaughan made purchases from estate of John Duggar. [] Moody Vaughan was the brother of James, Binns, David & George Vaughan. [Chancery Case] Although not proven, it is thus reasonable to assume that Polley Vaughan named in the will of John Duggar Jr. is the same as the wife of Moody Vaughan. Note: Binns, James, David, & George are all associated with James of Yarbrough Cr. and his wife Lucy. None of their known descendants match up with Polly Vaughan. Abraham Vaughan on the other hand is a name closely associated with Richard Vaughan, which in turn is a name closely associated Betsy, daughter of Polly Vaughan. While Abraham appears in the estate records of John Duggar, Jr., there is no Abraham in the tax digests of Brunswick Co. There is an Abraham in adjacent Dinwiddie Co. He is likely the Abraham that appears in Brunswick County. See Benjamin J. Vaughan for more curious details. |
Randolph aka Randel Vaughan - LKZM-BBX See Amelia Co. & Greensville Co. Randolph aka Randel Vaughan appears in one deed and a few tax digests 1785-1787. |
Richard Vaughan, Son of William Vaughan of Charles City Co. - LKY5-RXF Richard Vaughan. Richard Vaughan was b. by 1677 (He was an adult by 1698 when he received a land Patent. He d. in 1749 Brunswick Co. (VA Brunswick WB 02.165). He first appears in Prince George Co. in the 1704 Quitrents paying taxes on 309 acres (169 acres, his share of his father’s estate; and 140 acres half of a 281 acre patent to him and his brother William). In 1726, he received a land patent of 342 acres in Brunswick Co. This tract is very close to where I-85 crosses from Brunswick Co. into Dinwiddie Co. In 1828, Richard, then of Brunswick Co., sold his lands in Prince George Co. Later in 1828, he received another 255 acre land patent in Brunswick Co. Richard Vaughan (Richard the Younger), Son of Abraham Vaughan, Sr. - LVN4-MNY Richard Vaughan. Richard the younger first appears in 1761 selling the inheritance from his grandfather Richard (VA Brun DB 07.016). There is a 1762 deed that appears to belong to him. After that there are deeds from 1771 to 1830 that could belong to either Richard or yet other Richards. He may be Richard Vaughan, of Dinwiddie Co. 1782-1785 who moved to Mecklenburg Co. and lived there from 1786-1819. |
Richard Vaughan (Richard the Elder), Son of Richard Vaughan - MQK7-4ZF Richard Vaughan. Richard Vaughan and his wife Alice first appear in the Bristol Parish Register as the parents of James, b. 23 Jan 1721/2; Martha, b. 18 Nov 1724; and Richard, b. 16 Oct 1726. They first appear in Brunswick Co. in a 1733 deed. Hence, he was b. by 1702. His wife was Alice _____. There are later deeds that appear to belong to him through 1761. The Vestry in St. Andrew’s Parish provided support to Richard Vaughan and his wife (and later just Richard) from 1771 through 1798. Those dates are consistent with an aging Richard the Elder, or even his son Richard. Note: The Abraham and Richard just fade off of the Brunswick Co. records. However there are two Abraham’s and one Richard in adjacent Dinwiddie Co. The land inherited by them from their grandfather was on Waqua Cr. and is in very close proximity to the Dinwiddie Co. line. |

This document was then recorded in Brunswick County, VA on 26 July 1830. Richard Vaughan, Rutherford County is a possible brother or young uncle to Elizabeth “Betsy” Vaughan. Burnett Vaughan Rutherford County Guardian Book, Book No 8 Page 169 p. 229. 01 July 1850. A Richard Vaughan dies in Rutherford County, TN. This Richard was b. about 1778. Richard Vaughan was married first to Tabitha “Bitha” Edwards 16 Nov 1801, Brunswick County, Virginia. [We need proof of this. Is there a records of Tabitha in NC, perhaps a release of dower; or a date Richard arrived in NC? Otherwise, the Richard in TN could be either of the Richards that left in 1811; or Richard that m. Tabitha that left Brunswick Co. in 1814. Suggested research: FHC Rutherford Co. He owned 441 acres on the North side of Three Creeks which had been owned by his father. Under the rules of intestacy of the day, this land was inherited by his brother Pierce. Pierce gave ½ to William and ½ to their brother James. Later, William acquired the other half. Prior to his death he started giving away his property to his children: In 1787, 441 acres to his son William (VA Brunswick DB 14.293); in 1794 and 1795, slaves to daughters Irene & Sinah (Brunswick DB 16.053 & Brunswick DB 16.053); and in 1796 and 1798, slaves to son James (Brunswick DB 16.278 & Brunswick DB 17.250). In his will he names son James and Daughter Sinah (VA Brunswick WB 06.257). He did not name daughter Irene in his will. Brunswick Chancery Case 1801-038 consist only of a subpoena in a case filed by Irene Vaughan, Ellender Avery & Sinah Vaughan against James Vaughan.
